“Maintaining biodiversity at its present level is impossible if people are going to achieve a reasonable standard of living in the near future”
“Maintaining biodiversity at its present level is impossible if people are going to achieve a reasonable standard of living in the near future”
- Discuss this with reference to a tropical biome you have studied (40 marks)

Biodiversity means the variety of life forms/organisms in an ecosystem, biome or entire planet. Globally, biodiversity is not evenly distributed. It generally increases from the poles towards the equator as around 50% of the world’s plants and animals live in tropical rainforests. This is because of the proximity to the equator causing a warmer, more moist, stable climate which means plants grow better and can support more species higher up in the food chain. Standard of living is the level of wealth, goods and services, which are available to a person or ground within a population. For development and to improve people’s standard of living, it’s often necessary to make use of the world’s biodiversity. However, it has become clear that we must preserve the current level of biodiversity so that we can maintain the carbon sink that rainforests provide and so that we can continue researching and finding developments in certain medicines that rainforests can provide. Human beings have exploited the tropical rainforests for many years now for their abundance of resources and their biodiversity. The moist exploited is the Amazon rainforest which has already lost 20% of its area forever. Deforestation is the single biggest threat to the rainforest; the prime cause of it is cattle ranching. This is when land is cleared to provide space for cattle ranchers to herd their livestock to help increase beef production. This activity accounts for 60% of deforestation in Brazil, which is having a major effect on the biodiversity of the ecosystem. The impacts of deforestation are wide. In the Amazon there have been problems with increased forest fires, soil erosion and decreased biodiversity, caused by habitat loss. Subsistence farming is another factor

The truth of this though is that we as humans are trying to industrialize and develop the Amazon more and more every day for our own purposes. We are deforesting the forest; also known as deforestation. Since 1980 more than 580,000 square kilometers (224,000 square miles) of the Amazon forest has been destroyed due to deforestation. (Butler, “Deforestation in the Amazon”)…

A tropical rainforest is an ecosystem that occurs roughly within 28 degrees north or south of the equator (equatorial zone between the Tropic of Cancer and Tropic of Capricorn). They are characterised by their humidity (average of 88% in the rainy season and 77% in the dry season), hot temperature (average 27.9 °C during the dry season and 25.8 °C during the rainy season) but more importantly their extremely high rainfall (torrential rainfall - between 1,500 mm and 3,000 mm annually). Tropical rainforests contain the most diverse range and highest volume of plant and animal life found anywhere on the Earth, however, they are amongst the most threatened ecosystem globally due to the large scale fragmentation due to human activity and expansion – 16% of the Earth’s surface was once covered by tropical rainforest, yet the figure has significantly dropped to approximately 6% with no optimism of it increasing again. In this essay I will focus on the Amazon Rainforest, it is 2 times the size of India harbouring 10% of the world’s known species and is home to 350 ethnic groups.…

The Amazon Rainforest, located in the northern part of South America, is the largest rainforest on Earth, containing more than 60% of Earth’s fresh water, over 20% of oxygen on Earth, and huge amounts of carbon dioxide (ACEER). However, the Amazon Rainforest has been deforested principally in order to provide land for the locals who were homeless due to poverty, overpopulation, and government policies. Also, economic reasons such as providing land for cattle ranches, agriculture, logging, and mining (Maczulak) increased the rate of deforestation. In fact, since 1988, over 141,470 square miles of the Amazon Rainforest have been deforested (INPE). The imprudent use of the resources and land of the Amazon Rainforest is destroying the…

Biodiversity is the variability among living organisms from all sources, including terrestrial, marine, and other aquatic ecosystems and the ecological complexes of which they are part of, this includes diversity within species, between species, and of ecosystems. Biodiversity in animals have changed over time whether it has been through genetics or adaptations from outside forces, such as ecosystems. The question that has been through multiple assumptions and have been approached many times is: How has biodiversity on Earth changed over time? The question has opened many gates to many different answers, but what does it actually mean? This statement explains how organisms have grown and made adaptations throughout their ecosystems in order…

Every second, 1.5 acres of trees are cut down in a rainforest. That’s equivalent to two football pitches per second. At this rate, the Amazon rainforest will become devoid of life by 2030. Cutting down trees not only damages large habitual areas of the estimated 30 million people who live in the rainforest along with the animals they solely depend on, but affects the environment in many harmful ways. This can be through rapid and violent changes in the climate, an unbalanced ratio of carbon dioxide to oxygen impacting hugely on global warming, damage to the biodiversity of animals and tribes and fatal effects to the soil. Trees that are cut down can be used for a variety of different common purposes including rubber, oil, wax, glue and, more importantly, fuel. However, the list does not stop there. Trees are cut down to gain access to medicinal plants and create vast spaces to mine important ores. Yet possibly the biggest reason trees are cut down is to grow food. Commercial farmers need more land space to cultivate crops to feed our ever growing population as well as local farmers providing food for their family.…

The UN Earth Summit in Rio de Janeiro in 1992 defined biodiversity as being the variability between all living organisms, terrestrial, marine and aquatic. This includes the diversity within species, between species and of ecosystems. A reasonable standard of living does not mean that a person should live at a luxury level, but neither does it mean that a person should only live at a subsistence level. It should be somewhere in between where the person can afford to eat nutritious food, buy clothes for different weather and situation, keep their house clean and be able to devote some time for leisure activities.…

The Amazonian Rainforest consists of an expansive 350 million square acres smack in the middle of Brazil and many other countries. It is the largest rainforest in the world and is home to hundreds of indigenous species of plants and animals. However Brazil’s developing status is endangering the rainforests existence. It is currently reported that 500,000 trees are cut down every hour, and the country is losing anywhere from 20,000 to 100,000 species a year. To many this is unacceptable and the amazon should be protected, others believe that operations should continue as is. In reality the Amazon Rainforest needs to be developed in a sustainable manner because the rainforest is home to many species and is detrimental to global health, Brazil…

The Amazon rainforest is the largest tropical rainforest in the world which covers over five and half a million square kilometers. Over half of the Amazon is located in Brazil but also in South American countries; Peru, Venezuela, Ecuador, Colombia, Guyana, Bolivia and Suriname. (Science Kids, 2013). During the past 40 years, 20% of the Amazon rainforest has been cut down, this percentage could be higher but was not put in account due to logging.this causes damage and shows that there is less seen cuts. Scientists says that 20% trees could be lost in the next two decades. (National Geographic, 1996) The Amazon gets worse and worse every time it is observed. The main cause for this is deforestation. This investigation will show what is happening to the Amazon Region and what could be the management for it.…

The deforestation of the forests is occurring due to various reasons. There are some common causes of deforestation. Firstly, forests are being cleared for cattle pasture. Today, Brazil is the world’s largest exporter and producer of beef. Much of its expansion has taken place in the Amazon, which currently has more than 80 million head of cattle, up from 26.6 million in 1990 and equivalent to more than 85 percents of the total US herd (Bulter, 2012). Secondly, due to the agriculture, poor farmers use fire for clearing land and every year satellite images pick up tens of thousands of fires burning across the Amazon. For example, they use those land to plant with crops like bananas, palms, manioc, maize or rice (Bulter, 2012). Thirdly, It is about infrastructure improvements. Road construction in the Amazon leads to deforestation. Besides, it is used for building materials, furniture, and paper products (Bulter, 2012). Fourthly, another cause of deforestation is commercial agriculture. For example, Brazil is the world’s leading exporter of soybeans because the United States give them high prices in these products. That’s why soybeans have become one of the most important contributors deforestation in the Brazilian Amazon (Bulter, 2012). Fifthly, logging in the Amazon is controlled by strict licensing that allows timber to be harvested only in designated areas. On the other hand, there is significant evidence that illegal…

The biggest driver of deforestation is agriculture. Farmers cut the forests to supply more ground for plant crops or grazing livestock. This new land area contributes a much needed place to grow up a food provide to deal with the planet's steadily increasing population of humanity. This results in better and more abundant production of food and materials, virtually eradicating periods of want and lack. Economically, deforestation has contributed much in giving many communities the chances to make changes in their lives (Fiset 2011).…
