strong and respectful leader; he has just won a battle and has become ruler of Thebes. In his speech he starts off with “My countrymen‚ the ship of state is ship” this first line already shows that Creon is a patriotic man as he calls the citizens of Thebes his “countrymen” and calls Thebes “the ship of state” showing that he is loyal towards his country. He calls Thebes “the ship of state” meaning that he thinks Thebes is like a ship and that everyone’s fate is on the same boat. The audience at this

Antigone Analysis Antigone is a strong willed woman that defies her uncle’s orders and buries her dead brother Polyneices‚ who fought against Thebes in the civil war. She goes and buries her brother‚ and performs the rituals of the dead. I believe Antigone buried her brother out of divine edict‚ and not to defy the king. She may have been incredibly angry about the way her brother’s body had been treated‚ but I believe she done what she has done out of her own beliefs.

In Sophocles ’ Antigone‚ the question of who the tragic hero has been the subject of debate for years.  It is uncommon for there to be two tragic heroes in a Greek tragedy‚ therefore there can be only be one in Antigone.  Although Creon possesses some of the characteristics that constitute a tragic hero‚ he does not have all of the necessary qualities. Antigone‚ however‚ possesses all of the traits that are required for her to be the tragic hero.  According to Aristotle‚ there are four major characteristics

think it is sweet that Antigone wants to give her brother a proper burial despite his course of action in the war. Antigone is going against what King Creon put forth as a law. Therefore‚ she is risking her life. Some say that she is crazy and stupid for doing so. However‚ I would say that she is doing a brave and noble deed that should be recognized in a positive way. Just because her brother‚ Polyneices‚ deserves a proper burial‚ it does not make his actions forgivable or forgettable. 2.

One of the most devastating problems for the Classical Greeks was the women’s issue. Women in Classical Greece were not citizens‚ held no property‚ and indeed were not even allowed out of the house except under guard. Their status differed from that of the slaves of Greece only in name. This alone‚ however was not a problem -- the problem was that the Greeks knew‚ in their hearts‚ that this was wrong. Indeed‚ their playwrights harangued them about it from the stage of Athens continually. All of the

Sophocles‚ loyalty to family seems to be a recurring theme. We first see it when Antigone defies King Creon’s order to keep her brother‚ Polynices‚ unburied as a punishment for his betrayal of their country Thebes. We also see how Antigone’s sister‚ Ismene‚ accepts partial blame for the burial (even though she refused to actually do it) in an affectionate‚ loyal act. Creon is also family (their father’s brother)‚ but he‚ however‚ betrays this family trust and loyalty when he sentences Antigone to

is an obligation arising out of considerations of right and wrong. With this in mind‚ one could say that Creon‚ Antigone’s uncle as well as the king of Thebes‚ chooses to act with moral obligation. His decision to forbid the burial of his nephew Polyneices was to prove that he would not allow a traitor to be honored by being given a proper burial. His niece‚ Antigone‚ refuses to tolerate his order‚ and buries her brother‚ Creon’s nephew‚ anyway‚ so she is sentenced to death. Not even his own son

hamartia was his inability to be a good ruler who canable to make good decisions‚ reconsider his actions‚ and listen to the suggestions of his citizens. Creon’s hamartia caused led Creon to not reconsider or have a second thought when he outlawed the burial of Antigone’s brother‚ Polyneices. My suggestion to fulfill your request is to modify Creon’s hamartia so that Creon is a ruler who‚ is still a bad ruler‚ considers his actions with himself and the people who he rules.
