In class this week‚ I read an essay titled “The Indispensable Opposition” by Walter Lippman. This essay was difficult to understand because on the writing style he chose to use. This example of an extended definition describes the phrase “The Indispensable Opposition.” The question‚ “Why is opposition indispensable?” formed in my mind when I read the title of the essay. To me‚ indispensable means being absolutely necessary. Why are opposition and argument absolutely necessary? Some people may disagree

An argument presented by “Walter Ong” is a never ending debate on how writing can “restructure human consciousness”. There are many arguments that convey both pros and cons in regards to this argument. I mainly agree with Ong’s thesis statement which is; writing has destroyed our memory and increased our consciousness in various ways; also writing itself has interpreted our lives as technology (Ong 77). There have been many technologized systems‚ software‚ and etc‚ which have made our everyday life

Walter Lord is an American author who was born on October 8‚ 1917. He is best known for his book “A Night to Remember”‚ which was written based on the true story of the ship Titanic. The main point of the book “Day of Infamy” was based on the attack on Pearl Harbor and the days leading up to the event. Anyone that was there at Pearl Harbor go on about their day‚ and had no idea what was about to take place. An event such as Pearl Harbor was difficult to write about and did not hold my interest.

1. Fr. Walter Cizek faced many trials throughout his many years in Soviet Russia. Among the most testing of these trials were his years spent at the prison in Lubianka‚ being interrogated as a “Vatican spy.” Kept in isolation and left to his thoughts for years on end‚ he often turned to God and bible passages for support. However‚ even after all his prayer; he still fell to an interrogator’s methods. Turning once more to more fervent prayer‚ he comes to a realization that he had been praying all

about the assassination of Abraham Lincoln. I found James L. Swanson’s book enjoyable because of its descriptive words‚ and the author’s deep knowledge and love for the subject. Another book by Mr. Swanson I find very good is “The President Has Been Shot.” Swanson writes about the gruesome events in Dallas on November 22‚ 1963. The book is thrilling‚ suspenseful and sometimes even a little bit ironic‚ as it tells two sides of the story. Peter Ackroyd’s
