Homer‚ the protagonist‚ Odysseus‚ has not been a heroic person throughout the poem. Odysseus‚ Son of Laertes‚ has journeyed off with his crew in search of returning home and has not met the requirements of being a hero. Instead he displays he is insensible towards others‚ disloyal‚ and untrustworthy. One characteristic that Odysseus presents is being insensible towards his crew members. An example of this is when Odysseus and his men are trapped in the Cyclopes cave‚ Odysseus says “Now came the time

Odysseus can be portrayed as an antihero in The Odyssey. A hero is clever‚ respectful‚ brave‚ and shows mercy. Odysseus is the complete opposite of a hero. He is immature‚ barbaric‚ unfaithful‚ and a coward. Being faithful‚ or loyal‚ is one of the main aspects of being a hero. Book V shows us that Odysseus might not have been so faithful to Penelope: “Now as he spoke the sun set‚ dusk drew on/ and they retired‚ this pair‚ to the inner cave/ to revel and rest softly‚ side by side” (5. 234-236)

Aeolus and the Aeolian Bag could have been avoided if Odysseus has inspired a shared vision and encourage the heart. Like the text mentions‚ leaders cannot expect commitment if you are not putting in the effort to encourage it. (Kouzes and Posner 2014‚ p. 17) If Odysseus had been more transparent about his decisions‚ his crew would have been committed to him and probably trusted the fact that he would not save treasures for himself. Odysseus must have not been good about recognizing his crew’s contributions

The Odyssey‚ the protagonist‚ Odysseus‚ does not fit into this definition of a hero‚ although I consider him a leader. The reasons behind my disagreement with Odysseus not being a hero is because he drove his crew into a lot of trouble that was caused by his selfishness and care of his own reputation. Some might argue that Odysseus is a hero and I have an understanding of that since he did pull through with plans in many situations with his crew. An example of Odysseus caring too much about his reputation

Odysseus has long been known as classic epic hero‚ and‚ coupled with that‚ the perfect portrayal of ancient Greek values. However‚ there is another character in The Odyssey who displays these values more accurately—Odysseus’ son‚ Telemakhos. “’We three stand / ready to follow you and fight (23.126-128).’” In contrast to Odysseus’ loyalties‚ which are always somewhat uncertain and are in constant conflict with each other‚ Telemakhos’ values and allegiances are clear and straightforward. This is a
