Examples Of Odysseus Being A Hero
Is Odysseus a Hero?

Have you ever had an argument and there are two sides to it? Well, I have an argument that I know that I am right about. Many people have argued over the topic about Odysseus being a hero or not. I am here to tell you that Odysseus is NOT ahero. Some things about this time, is this was in Greece around 800 B.C. Odysseus is married and has a son. He is also the king of the island of Ithaca. He isn’t a leader, because he didn’t bring back any of his men home, he cheated on his wife, and he didn’t treat his men with respect.
First, In the beginning of Odysseus’s journey, he started out with about 720 men. Odysseus didn’t bring back ANY of his men back, just himself. Odysseus is supposed to be the leader and he can’t even bring

Odysseus had a wife named Penelope and a son, named Telemachus. A great leader that has a wife and a kid, would not cheat on his wife In the movie that we watched in class, it showed, that when his men got turned into animals having an affair had nothing to do with saving his men. He simply just did it for his enjoyment. He had people that needed to be turned back to human beings and Odysseus instead slept with Circe. In “The Language of Literature”, it says, “So day by day we lingered, feasting long on roasts and wine, until a year grew fat. But when the passing months and wheeling seasons brought the long summery days, the pause of summer, my shipmates one day summoned me and said: ‘Caption, shake off this trance, and think of home- if home indeed awaits us…” Notice that Odysseus’ men had to remind him of home. He wanted to stay there. How is a leader that is originally supposed to bring his men home, caught up in ladies. A men or hero definitely does not cheat on his wife knowing he has a family to build with his son. Another piece of evidence from the same book is, “Odysseus refers to two beautiful goddesses, Calypso and Circe, who have delayed him on their islands. A this point of the story, Odysseus has been away from home for more than 18 years- 10 of them spent in the war at Troy”. So what this is saying, is that he spent 8 years cheating on his wife and not caring about anyone but himself. Someone explain how he can be a cheating …show more content…
First off, he isn’t truthful to his men about what his real name is. In the book, “The Language of Literature”, it says, “My name is Nohbdy: mother, father, and friends, everybody calls me Nohbdy”. There is no reason for Odysseus to hide his name. A leader tells his men everything to make sure that his men feel safe and comfortable with him leading them. If Odysseus is not truthful about his name, what else could he be hiding? In the video we watched in class, he is also rude to his men. In the video, a guy was playing his recorder and Odysseus very rude, said he couldn’t. A leader/hero is supposed to make his men feel comfortable. That definitely doesn’t show leadership. The man was quietly doing his own thing, and he wasn’t even aloud to be himself. A leader doesn’t fake his name, and doesn’t make being be

Odysseus leads a large group of soldiers during the Trojan war and is spoken about as a great leader by other heroes and kings. However, Odysseus might not be the great leader he is praised as. He doesn’t trust his fellow crewmembers with essential details at many times, such as when he neglects to mention “Scylla/how to fight that nightmare?” for fear “the men would panic, desert their oars and huddle down and stow themselves away” (Book 12, line 386) and also when he…

When we think of someone who is a hero, we think of someone who is idolized for their bravery or amazing achievements; is Odysseus one of these heroes? “ The simple acts of heroism are often overlooked-that’s very clear to me not only in war but in peace” (source 2). Heroism can mean different things to different people and some people are heroes, but don’t get recognized. They can do many small acts of heroism and never become acknowledged as a hero, yet when they do something horrendous they are labeled as a villain.
