Abstract: This thesis examines Deepa Mehta’s trilogy—Water‚ Earth‚ Fire—and the trilogy’s exploration and contestation of colonial‚ anti-colonial nationalist‚ and religious ideologies as intersecting with patriarchal norms to enact symbolic and actual violence on the bodies of women.
