We will discuss the function of the initial assessment, the formative assessment and the summative assessment, in this section.
The Initial Asessment:
This is where we establish the skills that the learner has at present where we can find out any specific learning needs that we need to be aware of and where necessary establish any extra support that we could put into place. In this first assessment we can see the level of support that the learner is going to require in the different areas. We also will look at what they have done previously through their CV's and their previous certificates and discuss the relevance, and if it excludes them from any aspect of the qualification, for example, if they hold Maths and English at GCSE grade C and above then they would be exempt from the functional skills.We would cmplete an initial assessment in Maths and English to see what level they naturally come out at, this not only helps identifies their current level of knowledge and how much upskilling, if any, they will need. It is imperative that the learner knows where they are, what what they can do to improve , what behaviours are being recognised. Using data based feedback will motivate the learner if they are doing well as they can see how they are using their knowledge and if the learner needs some extra motivation then this method also works as it lets them know where they are and why they are at that point with clear next steps for them to improve.
