Having an area that is too noisy will not be suitable for the students, as it will distract them from the task they are being asked to complete. • Specific risks to individuals -
The way that the environment is planned needs to be considered based on the children that will be spending time within it. For example, recently a school trip was organised, it was a physical, high energy activity and there was a student who wasn't able to go due to high blood pressure, heart problems, this trip should possibly have been considered earlier on with this student in mind. • Organisation - equipment should be stored …show more content…
away securely in order to prevent hazards and tools should be stored clearly in order for students to understand where they need to be placed. • Furniture -
The size and style of the chairs, tables, benches, booths etc should be picked to suit the general age of the student using it. Otherwise, this could cause problems for posture, create uncomfortable backs etc. • The individual needs, age and abilities of the children and young people
Students should be considered when setting up the inside or outside educational environment and any SEN pupils in particular considered during organisation. •
Question 1b (Weighting: 0)
Explain how health and safety is monitored and maintained and how people in the work setting are made aware of risks and hazards and encouraged to work safely. Remember to include: • colleagues • visitors • families and carers.
There are many ways that health and safety is monitored and maintained within the school setting.
There is a site team which have the overall responsibility of carrying out safety checks routinely, have walk arounds and make sure that hazards don't go unreported. If there is a hazard it should be reported to the safety team immediately and every member of staff has the responsibility to remain aware of any problems on the school site and to pass this information on. Equipment including food technology related equipment - ovens, fridges, woodwork machines, fire extinguishers etc should be routinely checked and any electrical equipment should be annually.
There is a school safety policy which needs to be followed and there is a organisational structure relating to staff that should be followed. This includes connections made between site manager, lettings, contractors, facilities management, water hygiene, risk assessments, COSHH, fire wardens and first aid.
The school is required to carry out annual risk assessments and to determine which areas in the school are most hazardous, the likelihood and who is most at risk. Children and all staff should be vigilant and always report any hazards as soon as
noticed.
Equipment should be used safely, with the correct use of tools and handling materials, e.g. gloves in Science when handling materials and when using machines cutting wood to wear goggles.
Health and safety should be a topic discussed within team meetings and the health and safety policy should be one that is read, understood, with safety inductions given to new staff and for all staff to know where to go in case of an emergency.
