Post 1 Lab/tutorial task title and date: Bad designs 24/01/13 First six words of my post: The picture below is an example of a bad design My summary and reflection: The picture uploaded for this tutorial is an example of a bad design. It has arrows pointing at different directions but without any instructions to follow. Also, the colours of the arrows are not distinctly different from the metal plate and not …show more content…
very clear to see. Assuming a person was to see this, the person would be very confused as to what to do because it does not pass any message across. We can overcome the problem of this design by first of all showing clearly the image of the arrows, then write the instructions of what message both arrows are trying to pass across to whoever sees them.
Post 2 Lab/tutorial task title and date: Affordances, Mapping, Constraints and Conventions 14/02/13 First six words of my post: This is my post for this tutorial My summary and reflection:
The task for this tutorial was to analyse some actual devices in order to identify the psychological concepts that have been employed in their design. Affordances, mapping, constraints and conventions have been taken into consideration for the analysis of an iPhone 4s. IPhone 4s was chosen because it is my mobile device and I am very familiar with it. Post 3
Lab/tutorial task title and date: PACT analysis group task 07/02/13 First six words of my/our post: finding your way around the EC building My summary and reflection:
Since it’s a new building, it will be difficult for the returning and new students to locate their
classrooms.
There should be more detailed signs on every floor to assist students to their respective classrooms. As for the technicians, they will also find it difficult to find the correct maintenance hatch to proceed with repairs. Lights on the floor can help them find their way to the correct hatch by dividing each hatch with different colour lights so that it would be easier for them to identify.
An electronic directory panel could be very useful to anyone new to the building as it gives out accurate directions and pathways. It is also more easier to understand rather than asking somebody else who can give out even more confusing directions. We can also use GPS or tracker on smartphones to find directions to classrooms. As for the IPhone users, SIRI can be very useful since it requires internet data to respond to your needs and therefore can help and assist you in finding your ways in the EC Building.

106CR Designing for
Usability
Assignment 3 Portfolio of tutorial and homework posts
Submit to Turnitin on Moodle by 23.55 on 12/07/13
(see submission rules on page 2) This assignment is worth 20% of the module mark.
The Task
Week by week on 106CR you will be responding to tasks that are set for you in the Moodle ‘Lab and Tutorial Task Forum’.
Sometimes you will be doing the tasks alone and sometimes you will work in a group.
Assignment 3 for 106CR asks you to select the three Moodle posts from throughout the year, which you think best demonstrate your thinking and research skills and the extent to which you have met the learning outcomes for the module. Obviously, as you will have a wide selection of work to choose from you should select your best, most impressive work.
Two of the posts must be individual work (i.e. not the result of group work). The third post can either be individual work or one of the group write-‐ups.
There is no need to print out your Moodle posts (Your marker can see all the posts you have made as a single thread on Moodle) You are asked, however, to include the ‘tutorial task title and date’ and ‘first six words of the post’ on the submission form.
You will need to write a brief statement of reflection (no more that 1000 words TOTAL (3 x 330 words) this is an absolute limit) on how each of your chosen lab posts, in some way, respond to one (or more) of the Module’s learning outcomes. Which are, to remind you:
1. Utilise a variety of tools and techniques for the generation of creative design solutions based on the PACT process of contextual design proposed by Benyon et. Al. including contextual modelling, technology scoping and rapid prototyping.
2. Describe the user-‐centred design process and its component phases, identifying the opportunities for user involvement and the methods of review and evaluation appropriate to each phase.
3. Demonstrate the preparation and conduct of a variety of usability evaluation methods in the development of design solutions including heuristic analysis, usability tests and cognitive walkthroughs.
4. Generate a range of prototype solutions, from low fidelity storyboards to partial high fidelity applications, to a variety of communication, interface and application design problems.

Marking Method and Criteria
The marking method for this assignment is designed for maximum speed. Each component (three lab/homework Moodle posts and one statement of reflection form) will be marked out of 5 – giving a grand total out of 20 (equivalent to 20% of the module mark).
• I do not envisage giving any zeros (except for missing components).
• 1 or 2 marks will indicate below standard work (typical of bare pass / third level work).
• 3 marks will indicate standard work (typical of a 2.2 level).
• 4 or 5 marks will indicate above standard work (typical of a 2.1 and First grade)
Please note that written feedback will NOT be given for this assignment as the feedback on your content will have taken place on Moodle or through in-‐class discussion. A mark will be provided on Moodle.
