“Rule #1: You may bring only what fits in your backpack. Don’t try to fake it with a purse or a carry-on. Rule #2: You may not bring guidebooks, phrase books, or any kind of foreign language aid. And no journals. Rule #3: You cannot bring extra money or credit/debit cards, travelers’ checks, etc. I’ll take care of all that. Rule #4: No electronic crutches. This means no laptop, no cell phone, no music, and no camera. You can’t call home or communicate with people in the U.S. by Internet or telephone. Postcards and letters are acceptable and encouraged. That’s all you need to know for now. See you at 4th Noodle." (Johnson 4-5)

“Before she could answer, the waiter sprang at his chance to brush some crumbs from David's chair. He had been hanging around their table like a vulture, waiting for them to eat the last papadum crumb so he could take away the basket. He eyed the last piece sadly, as if it were the barrier between him and eternal happiness. Ginny grabbed it and shoved it in her mouth. The man looked relieved and took the basket but immediately returned to stare mournfully at their water glasses.” (Johnson 201)

Just looking at it makes me want to play some Frank Sinatra tunes and sway a little. I have a crush on a building. I'd been in there several times but never to work. I always knew there were offices in there but the face never penetrated, really. You don't work in the Empire State Building. You propose in the Empire State Building. The atmosphere at Applebee's was very pleasant and our waiter was friendly and accommodating. We counted seven courtesies (please, thank you, your welcome, may I help you, etc.) that he said to us. Unfortunately, we did overhear another waiter making unprofessional complains about their customer. Our waiter also told us that he had been in the service industry for nine years and had been working at Applebee’s for two years. He had the most…

Today I started reading Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children by Ransom Riggs. I really like how the author describes the background of the story in the prologue of the book. It really helps to understand the story better later on. Jacob, the main character in this book, is kind of a shy kid, and seems like a slacker. He doesn’t seem to want to work hard at anything. I really love how the author jumps right into the plot with Grandpa Portman’s frantic phone call while Jacob is at work. Very excited to read more!…

If one thing is for sure, people change whether it be for better or worse. You observe this in most of the characters in Lord of the Flies and especially Jack and Ralph. They each fight for authority one way or another, despite Ralph having already been elected chief. Although they had landed in the same unfortunate situation at the same time, their initial respect for one another dwindles and turns into contempt as the time drones on. The second Jack becomes sick of Ralph’s jurisdiction, he rebels and tries to take the crown for himself while Ralph tries to keep the kingdom together.…

Individuals choose not to go on adventures due to the fact they have witnessed, experienced, or sometimes even had that gut feeling of fear of the unknown. In the short story “Eveline” by James Joyce and in the poem “Sadie and Maud” by Gwendolyn Brooks, fear of the unknown and life’s happenings ruined certain individual’s life altering adventure. My own experience as a young adult immediately succeeding high school, debating on whether or not to move away for college has taught me that life is too short to turn down an adventure. Even if I am afraid of the unknown, I’d rather suffer the consequences than to regret my prior decisions for the rest of my life.…

Some may seem a certain way at first, but after time and familiarity, it can become apparent that people are not always what you thought, or what they appear to be: “It’s easy to become anything you wish...so as long as you’re willing to forfeit your soul” (Yang, 29). This quote is trying to make a point that some would rather lose themselves to change, but they can only change…
