Do you have a person in your life that, without them, nothing would be the same? From your spouse, to your kid’s coach, everyone plays a role. Just like in real life, stories have small characters, that make big differences. Every character in a story has a reason to be there. Without them, important parts of the plot would not be illustrated. We see this in the novel, 1984, with the characters Julia, O’Brien, and Parsons. While all different, they also have similarities.
Someone who plays a large role in Winston’s life, is Julia. Julia’s slim, young figure causes Winston to begin making a lot of risky, secret trips to meet her. Julia’s attractiveness isn’t the only reason that Winston likes to be with her that much. The characters, Julia and Parsons, are very different.While Parsons is an unattractive man who supports the Party, Julia is a young, attractive woman who despises the Party very much. These depictions are what make Winston like Julia, and hate Parsons as much as he does. A similarity between characters has to do with O’Brien and Julia. They both plan a secret meeting with Winston, and both have watched Winston without him knowing anything. O’Brien’s plan to meet Winston is by walking with Winston and telling him to stop by his place to grab something. He gives Winston his address, and Winston gives O’Brien his attention. Julia takes a different approach, but it is still as effective. She knocks into Winston on the street, and in the process of him helping her up, she gives Winston a note.
