Some people came because they hoped for more opportunities, and others came because they needed to escape the horrible conditions in their own countries. From the major immigration wave that occurred from 1815-1865 was most people from North and West Europa. They arrived at the Asians came to California on the 1800s because they had heard about the California gold rush.
Europeans who came to the US mainly came to the East Coast to cities like New York, Boston, Philadelphia and Charleston. For Asians it was a shorter to come to the west coast so they arrived mainly in California, that they were very happy with due to the California Gold Rush.
“The Great Potato Famine” in Ireland brought hunger, harm and horror to Ireland. A lot of people died, and a lot of Irish fled to America in hope of a better life. Across the atlantic was it not as amazing as they hoped. The Irish was looked at as dirty catholics and on a lot of job ads it said “No Irish needs to apply”.
How happy the people who lived in America where that the immigrants came varied from times to times. During the Civil War did both the Union and the Confederacy relied on the immigrants strength. During hard times with few jobs available did the americans blame the immigrants and said that they were “stealing all the jobs”.
