They yearned for new ways to have fun. Black and white movies came out in the cinema in 1920; in 1922, the first all-colored movie came out. The movies were cheap entertainment and Americans could not stay away from it. By the end of the 1920s, an average of 100 million Americans would travel to one of the 25,000 cinemas on a weekly basis (American-historama.org). The 1920s was also known as the Golden Age of Sports. The first sports, such as baseball, boxing, tennis, golf, basketball, and hockey, took off. They became very popular and were broadcasted on the radio. They even started to provide live commentary which boosted the popularity of the radio. Babe Ruth and Jack Dempsey were sports heroes, attracting a large crowd. Sports became a very popular entertainment for Americans (bbc.co.uk). Along with the radio came the jazz age. Following this monumental fulfillment, women decided they did not have to be so ladylike anymore. These women, known as flappers, started to drink, smoke, and dress more sexual than in previous generations (History.com). They decided they were just as equal as men and began to attend college and find a career. They did not rely on men to live and took control of their own lives.
Flappers started to throw away the older generation’s clothing and to show off some skin. They wore short skirts and fringe flapper dresses. Their accessories included cigarette holders, feather headbands, and pearls. They even started to wear makeup which was previously not allowed as it was associated with prostitution.
