2.01 Studying Development!

The research methods used in this study were questionnaires, data collection, cross-sectional, and observation. They used questionnaires because they wanted to give them questions to see how alike or different when the twins are separated or together. Also, the researchers used the method data collection to get information on how similar they are. Like their hobbies, jobs, personality, and how they act socially. Then, the researchers used the method crosssectional because it is a study that is used to compare people that are not the same age, and the twins could be different ages. Lastly, they used the method observation because they are watching closely to get data on how much they have in common considering that the twins have been separated early in their life or together for most of their life. !

The nature vs. nurture debate is revealed by the study showing that just because sibling are in the same environment (nurture) does not make them any more alike then thy would be if they were in adoptive homes separated. Although, if the parents raise them or influence the same way, then they can be alike in many ways not just their heredity (nature).

They used this as an experiment so they could conduct research to see if twins who grew up together and shared the same environment make them more alike than twins who were split up in different home environments. They collected data and placed them in a chart and a graph to display their data. This is one of the scientific method’s steps. Also, they used case studies to conduct this research. The examiner sits down with twins separately and talks about different topics and questions with the twin. The examiner writes notes down about each response they are given. Moreover, the last method they researchers use is a questionnaire. After they do a self examine of each twin, they give them a questionnaire to fill out. A questionnaire contains list of questions that can be filled out and used to interview someone about a topic of interest. I believe they were chosen because each method has a weakness, if only one was used then the research would be very questioned if it was done right.     The title of the article is: Intimate Relationship Development During The Transition to Adulthood: Differences by Social Class. I chose this topic and article because it I was curious about intimate relationships and differences by social class. I would've thought there would be differences in races, but not social class. This article is about the differences in intimate relationships by social class. The article talks about how young adolescents in lower-class tend to engage in sexual behavior, cohabitation and marriage more frequently than higher class adolescents. I never thought about examining this aspect of social development. The article also speaks about how adolescents make different choices than their parents. It also talks about the transition from adolescence to adulthood and relationships. I also chose this article because the study included military personnel. I am a veteran of the United States Navy and I married my first husband very young although the marriage didn't last, I'm sure it wasn't for any reason listed in the study. The article mentions that military personnel or more likely to marry and marry younger than their civilian counterparts, with strong effects on black. I find this interesting and was interested in the rest of the article which also speaks about how social class directly shaped the relationships of other groups as well such as prisoners and sexual minorities. If I had to write a research paper on this topic I'm not sure I would use this article. I'm not sure if it is because I don't want to believe what is being said in this article or if it is because I don't believe it has any truth. I don't believe that there is any bias, I just think that how could social class have anything to do with love. I didn't marry my husband and a young age because I was poor and uneducated.
