Course Description: Principles & practices of management; an overview of the functional areas of business; an introduction to case problem-solving.

Credit Units: 3 units
Course Objectives: At the end of the course, the students are expected to:
a. Expound the concepts of organizations and management and the need for sound, effective and efficient management;
b. Differentiate and describe the various management functions, roles, activities, skills, levels etc. and their applications in today’s business environment, locally and globally
c. Identify the key competencies needed to be an effective manager
d. Identify the internal and external factors and forces of the organization that managers must confront in their daily work locally and globally
e. Explain the imperatives of social responsibility and ethics in management
f. Identify the stages in the decision making process and demonstrate critical thinking and decision making when presented with managerial problems
g. Explain the concept of strategic and organizational planning
h. Demonstrate an understanding of the concept of groups and teams as well as human resource management
i. Identify the theories of motivation and communication and their application in the organizational context
j. Identify different leadership styles and their effects on organizational performance
k. Identify management controls for effective implementation of plans
l. Recognize situations in which management issues and concepts are practiced for actual effective decision making on management responsibilities.
Rationale of MGT 101 in the BSM Program:
