24 Ms. Seligman Article: The Eyes Have It
Seminar Homework 7/1/24 Ms. Seligman Article: “The Eyes Have it” Summary: Many claim that reflexes are something you're born with; you can either react to things quickly or you can't. However, Grandmaster Doc-Fai Wong claims otherwise. In his article, "The Eyes Have It," he explains that an important part of martial arts is the training of the eyes. In ancient China, when firearms did not exist, martial artists practiced throwing weapons, which required great precision and sharp vision. To add on, they also trained their reflexes to the point where they could catch objects mid-flight! As stated by Grandmaster, all of these skills can be earned through a variety of eye exercises and activities based on reaction time. For example, one of the exercises he mentions is rolling your eyes clockwise …show more content…
Moving on, he also speaks of an exercise for eye reflexes, where you choose two "slightly different kinds of uncooked red beans,” combine them in a bowl, and then separate them into their original bowls. Over time, your reflexes will significantly improve and you'll be able to sort the beans at great speed. After 6 weeks of sorting beans, he says the training should be intensified, so he describes ways to make the training more challenging. Near the last third of the article, Grandmaster includes night and day eye exercises—day training will help relax your eyes and balance your tired night training. All in all, the eye conditioning that he writes of gradually increases in difficulty as your eyes become more vigilant, and will take around 5 to 6 months to complete if practiced every day. If one commits themselves to this training schedule, they will significantly improve their “ability to notice movement and react quickly and

The mental health profession has made impressive strides in the diagnosis of various mental illnesses. The present situation contrasts sharply with the state of the profession in the past when practitioners were stunned by illnesses that they could not diagnose. In his book, Look me in the eyes, John Elder Robinson provides insights into the struggles endured by those ailing from Asperger’s syndrome. He details his experiences with this condition while giving focus to his inability to properly interact with others and respond properly to various situations (Robison, 2008). The book also highlights the failure of the mental health profession to deliver appropriate…

In “Lazy Eyes,” Michael Agger explains that when reading electronic texts, we tend to skim through various types of manuscript. I agree with Agger in that we do tend to skim electronic texts. This seems to be a normal reading pattern for most people. This is the 21st century, we want everything faster and faster so it is no wonder why skimming is becoming more prevalent and that it is becoming the norm.…

In “Learn to Look,” the author gave tips on how to communicate better when conversations become crucial. When conversations become heated, it is important for people to pay attention to content and condition of the conversation, which are the topic under discussion and the response from people. By doing this, “you can respond quickly. The sooner you notice you’re not in dialogue, the easier it is to get back and the lower the costs” (Patterson et al., 2012). People need to be aware of what they are doing and the response they are getting from others to communicate more effectively. The author also stated that it is important to be aware when people starts to feel unsafe. When people feel safe, they can communicate…

J.F. Clarke once stated, “The bravest of individuals is the one who obeys his or her conscience.” To me, this statement means that any individual who follows their conscience, and what they find to be right or wrong, is most brave, or strong, because they step away from society’s opinion and go with their own feelings whether it be what they need or desire. I agree with this statement because I also feel that an individual who listens to their conscience shows bravery. In my opinion someone who follows their conscience rather than society’s standards shows a lot of strength. It takes a lot of character for a person to leave their comfort zone to do the right thing, especially when that person has no support. Two literary works that support my opinion are The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn by Mark Twain and The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins. In both of these literary works the protagonists are faced with life altering decisions where they must make choices and differentiate right from wrong while having no support from other characters.…

Many times in life, people seek vengeance on one another because they think it’s the right thing, when it’s wrong. However revenge is too tempting there for one cannot retain it. In many situations the person seeking revenge not only hurts themselves but everyone amongst them. Mahatma Gandhi confirms this when he says “An eye for an eye only ends up making the whole world blind”. This means, from revenge you only end up impairing everyone from the resentful wrongs you perform. Some may agree or disagree with this quote. Euripides shows this quote being true in his play Medea.…

David Mamet correctly stated that, “…it is the human lot to try and fail…” This quote means that human beings are destined to always attempt to improve their lives although they are seldom successful. The two works of literature that best support this interpretation are the The Bluest Eye by Toni Morrison and “Macbeth” by William Shakespeare. Pecola and Macbeth, the protagonists from both works, strive to improve their “current” situations but fail miserably.…
