Developing is something that takes place at all times in the Army from the simple things of counseling and giving advice to Soldiers. To building individual and team skills, to helping Soldiers through underlying issues. It is my personal belief that the most important competency is being able to develop other Soldiers. In order to develop Soldiers it requires a diverse set of skills this includes patience’s, understanding, time, selflessness, and good two way communication. From my personal experience I have found that developing others is something many leaders only chose to do only when it is convenient for them. I have seen many NCOs who are more than willing to help in the development of stellar Soldiers, to take credit for being their leader because it’s easier for them to not have to invest much time and be made to look like a great leader because they have a smart Soldier. In the beginning this Soldier had made some bad decisions. I feel that it should be every leader’s duty to strive to help fix those problems and hopefully turn them into leaders for the future. The way I see it, if he would have been separated from the Army after his incident then the company would not have had to deal with him, however there is no way to tell if he ever would have been able to get his issues fixed or if he would have stayed going down the wrong path. Developing Soldiers can mean many different things to different people. Depending on their leadership approach, it can range from developing Soldiers in leaders, to just turning them into more responsible young adults. It simply comes down to what kind of leader a person wants to be. I feel that most of the leadership this Solider had while he had his family issues going on leading up to his failed drug test failed this Soldier in a small way. Most of his leadership just saw a headache and passed him around from team to team and not wanting to put in the time and effort to deal with him and try to make him a better Soldier, or even person.
