3 Major Concerns of a Driver
Drivers have many concerns they should be aware of while driving. If they are not aware of these concerns it could put their life at risk, as well as the other drivers on the road. Some of the concerns drivers should be aware of is watching their speed, having a safe following distance, and making sure there are no distractions while they are driving. If the driver is aware of all of these concerns then it will make driving a safer and better experience for them, as well as everyone else surrounding them. Speeding seems to be the biggest issue many drivers have a problem with. Speeding is also one of the main causes of collisions. When you speed, you have less time to react to unexpected situations and other drivers have less time to react to your situation. The faster your car goes, the longer it takes for your car to come to a complete stop; the braking system in cars is not designed for high speeds. This is a major concern for all drivers on the road because high speed accidents are almost always fatal whether you use a seat belt/ airbag or not. Another concern drivers should be aware of is having a safe following distance. You always want to make sure you are a good distance between you and the person in front of you because it gives you more time to respond to what is happening. One way you can make sure that you are a good distance is by doing this trick called the “three second rule”. When the car in front of you passes a sign, object, etc., simply count “one Mississippi, two Mississippi, three Mississippi.” If you pass the object, sign, etc., before you finish counting then you are following too closely. Having a safe following distance could save your life and the life of others.
` Lastly, you always want to make sure there are no distractions while you are driving. Some of these distractions may include having friends in your car, loud music, texting while driving, talking on the phone, eating, drinking, doing make up, etc. If any of these things

Driver distraction can be defined as a diversion of the mental attention away from activities or skills needed for safe driving and completion of the activity. A distraction is a fact of having a person’s concentration disturbed by any external or internal stimuli. (Regan, 2007) When drivers are distracted, their attention is divided between the “primary tasks” of driving and “secondary non-driving tasks” such as conversation, radio listening, and technology use. These external stimuli causes the driver’s cognitive skills to be used to analyse both the road situation and the secondary task, resulting to the impairment of the driver’s situational consciousness, decision-making skills and driving performance. Driver distractions…
