I strongly disagree with the building of Polymet mining in Hoyt Lakes for the very large amount of pollution that is caused, the tremendously high cost of fixing a polluted mine, and a very, very bad track record. The Polymet mine will cause so much pollution such as the sulfuric acid drainage: sulfide + H20 + O2. If this is to be leaked into the rivers it can cause toxicity to marine life. The Polymet Mine my also cause pit walls, waste rocks piles, tailings basin, and even heavy metal contaminants which will cause a lot of damage to marine life and life on land. The second point is that Polymet has a very bad track record. The financial and environmental statistics are dismal. Pollution is not always predictable. One hundred…

Like any formal writing, the beginning is equally important as the end. In order to appreciate the present, the past needs to be understood. Knowing the journey of where I grew up from the beginning to present day is amazing. It’s hard to believe there was a time in my hometown, Iron Mountain, Michigan, where electricity didn’t exist nor did the everyday tools we now take for granted. I often wonder what the city looked like to my grandparents and their family before them.…

Within the Civil Rights Movement, a great impact on education and schooling systems took place, thanks to the Little Rock Nine. The Little Rock Nine were a number of students who were brave enough and were prepared enough to integrate the Little Rock school system and Central High School. Their names were, Melba Pattillo Beals, Ernest Green, Minnijean Brown, Gloria Ray Karlmark, Elizabeth Eckford, Carlotta Walls LaNier, Thelma Mothershed, Jefferson Thomas, and Terrance Roberts. News of a tragedy quickly spreads through towns and cities where such events take place. Often they can spread to a larger audience to encompass a whole state or country surrounding the incident. However, every once in a while there is the one headline that grabs the attention of the entire world. This is no more evident than the San Jose mine collapse in the Atacama region of Chile back on August 5, 2010. Although many accidents and deaths happen in the mining industry each year worldwide, the United States recorded about 12,000 injuries and deaths for 2006-2007 according the United States Department of Labor (n.d.), none in recent memory had gathered so much attention as did the collapse mine in the northern parts of Chile that trapped 33 miners riveted a world.…

The United States was established on July 4, 1776 with the Declaration of Independence. Since the signing of the Declaration of Independence, the United States has gone through many changes and will continue to change for years to come. As I think of the future of this country I dream of how America may be in 2100, it will be extremely different. No one can predict exactly how the nation will change, but there are many differing opinions. The United States will change in many ways such as social equality, social class, racism, gender equality, employment, economy, poverty, culture, role of government, and the role of the United States in the world. Some of these aspects will change more than others but overall I bet you that all these things will change in some way. Some people would say that some of these changes would be vast and radical. Some of these changes may be bad, but others will help the United States flourish as a nation. In the years proceeding to 2100 the United States will grow and develop more and more and our nation will not be the same as it is today.…

On August 5, 2010, a small copper mine located in Chile suffered a cave-in which left 33 workers trapped underground. With workers being trapped 300 meters below ground with limited food, water, and oxygen, nobody knew for sure how long they would survive. After four days of being trapped, there was still no idea if any of the miners were even alive. Never before have so many workers survived being trapped underground for so long (Yang, 2010). Fortunately, in this case, tears turned to amazement as all 33 miners were located and rescued without any lives lost.…
