301 Scenario 1
Unit 301: Communication and professional relationships with children, young people and adults
Worksheet 4: Scenario 1

Consider the following questions for each example. Your response needs to demonstrate your knowledge and understanding of the policies and procedures in your setting.
What should you do ?
What should you say to the two learners?
What action (if any) do you need to take?

Unit 301

Learning outcome
2.5

You are supporting a science lesson in a Year 9 classroom. There has been some light- hearted banter amongst the learners re the forthcoming school prom. You have intervened in a friendly way but the general chat has continued and as it hasn’t seemed to have affected their work – you have ignored it. When the lesson ends you are going towards the next class when you see that two of the learners are shouting abuse at each other. When you ask them what is wrong, one of them turns on you and shouts for you ‘to mind your own business!’

Action to take

I would approach the two learners, explain to them that their behaviour was unacceptable. We do not shout at each other or speak disrespectfully to any adult in school. I would further explain that I had given them a gentle warning to stop their conversations earlier in class but they had failed to take notice which has now resulted in a more serious incident. I would then have to refer both learners to their Phase Leader who would decide what action should be taken. An incident of this nature has to be dealt with by a member of the Senior Leadership Team because it is viewed as ‘Serious and deliberate’ in line with the Heronsgate Schools Behaviour Management Policy.

As a teaching assistant I am part of the wider team of teaching staff in a school. Everyone has different roles and responsibilities and this can sometimes lead to conflicts. On one occasion I was working with an EMA class doing role plays in a hall. It was the last lesson of the day and we were using the interactive white board. The after school film club was due to use the room straight after us and the coordinator was very annoyed that she was unable to come in and set up ahead of her class. She insisted that the EMA class use another space. While I could understand her frustration at being delayed I could also see the benefits to the EMA class of using the hall. It provided the children with opportunities to do exercises that couldn’t be done in standard classroom. I could also tell that they really enjoyed working in the space. The discussion between the teachers became slightly heated and I could see that there was tension. In order to resolve the conflict I suggested we carry out the activities that require the white board early so that the coordinator could come in towards the end of our lesson and set up the film. This solution was accepted by all. I felt I dealt with the situation constructively.…

BULLYING, this is very common in nurseries and schools and has been for years, but bullying is taken more seriously now than it was in the past years. Bullying should be stopped at all times, if a child is persistently is bullying other children then senior members of staff must be notified, senior members of staff then try to work with the child and involve the parents to discuss the problem of bullying. If such behaviour continues then the setting would contact relevant organisations for example family practitioners to work with the family and child to see why the child is displaying such actions towards other children. The family practitioner would then decide if other organisations need to be involved such as social services. Bullying is very common it can start either with a group of children, sometimes one to one which progresses in other children getting involved. Sometimes children bully a certain child they don’t like, bullying can vary from child to child. Children can get bullied over their clothes, hair or outlook. For example a new child starts school, child A is the new child she is very shy and doesn’t talk much, child B has been in this school for a long time and is well known by all children. Child A is playing outside, child B comes along and starts to tease child A. Child B makes horrible remarks about child A calling her names and saying she smells and he doesn’t like smelly people. This has been a very upsetting experience for child A she is upset and now scared of child B, she needs to tell someone of child B but sometimes children are so scared of the children that bully them that they suffer in silence. This would have drastic effects on the child, the child would get withdrawn from school, would be scared and would not concentrate on school…

Who's fault was it, you say? It was the main culprits as always and a few new ones to add to that. Our teacher told the whole class to do some silent reading although the misbehaving misfits cannot behave even if it was to save their lives in my opinion. All they do is talk, laugh and make senseless noises that distract the teacher from teaching us. The time is now twenty minutes to one o'clock, our lesson started exactly 25 minutes ago, in that time that they wasted I wrote a one paged draft of a creative writing piece that I had been working on.…

Had I experienced the same thing, I probably would have sent Shameika to the principal’s office and tried to gain control of the class. As teachers and leaders we have a moral responsibility to the students, and when they are unruly it is better for them if we “let natural consequences teach responsible behavior.” (Covey P. 128). Covey states that people may not like the consequences but we should care enough for them to “suffer their displeasure.” (P. 128). If however, I lost control and acted out in aggression the way Clark did, I would not have left the class without at least letting the principal know. Even if I felt that the only course of action left was to walk away from the situation, I still have an obligation and moral responsibility not to leave the minor children in my charge alone without telling another adult at the school, especially after an emotionally charged…
