Both the Pocket Mouse and the Peppered Moth’s environment changed in color from light to dark from a major environmental impact, causing both species to adapt. The best fit organism for the environment at the time continued to reproduce until their color changed over time, and adapted to become better camouflaged from predators. The Peppered Moth and the Pocket Mouse both carry the genetic mutations of a dark color allele in the gene pool as opposed to only a light colored allele, which is the reason natural selection was able to occur and this adaptation affected the population in that specific…

Peppered moths are usually found near London, England. Light colored moths were very common to find. The moths would rest on pale colored lichens. When they rested on them it was harder for birds to see and eat them. During the industrial revolution, however, smoke from the factories killed the lichens. As a result this exposed darker tree bark.. Scientists began to notice that there was increasing numbers of dark-colored moths. This change is called industrial melanism which is a darkening caused by industry. The appearance of the darker colored moths might suggest that the moths evolved to suit their surroundings. There is also more to the story.…

Isn’t it quite amazing to find such talent in our 40th President of the United States, Ronald Wilson Reagan? Not only has he successfully had careers in acting, televising, and governing the state of California, but he has also managed to become a successful president. During his presidency he has managed to up-lift states’ rights around the nation, giving them their own choices in how to spend their grants. By consolidating grants into block grants, he was successfully capable of giving states the chance to do so. While this decision had negative effects, it was also very beneficial to some aspects of the states.…

The peppered moth has “changed” over the past 200 years from its lighter white coloration to a darker charcoal, and then back again to it’s original lighter, color. How it this possible? It only appears as though this moth has magically changed but in all actually it is a result of natural selection. These moths are an example of Darwin’s theory of evolution, natural selection being one cause of evolution. A background about these moths, information about natural selection, the natural selection process in this situation, and the outcome will provide you with some insight on how these moths “magically changed.”…

The color of the peppered moths vary. Some peppered moths were born “peppered”, being all white with black speckles, and some are born completely black. The peppered moths potentially would have been wiped out during the Industrial Revolution, when the pollution in the air caused the trees to turn black and it was hard for the white speckled moths to blend into the trees. (Larsen, 2008) The black peppered moths were able to blend into the darkened tress, making it easy to camouflage themselves against being eaten by birds. Variation amongst the peppered moths saved them from being non-existent. This shows how variation is important amongst humans as well, all being born different with different traits that can or cannot be advantageous. (Larsen,…
