These are the effects of solitary confinement which means that you need to be solitary… alone!
However, going back to the movie, our four characters are also in serious deep trouble even if they are not really alone. They manifested signs and symptoms of this psychiatric syndrome; and though, they battle their own personal issues along the movie, the turmoil brought about by the unfortunate circumstances of being isolated from the noise and bustle of the outside world, as well as the presence of their families, really crept on their mind until they reached the outside world… or so they thought.
Dane Cook who also portrayed an astronaut with a Jekylle and Hyde character stated in one of his interviews that this movie is really based on what are being done to our astronauts now and how they are prepared for long-term space travel. Our real astronauts are also placed in underground simulators where they need to spend their 300,400, or 500 days inside to make them feel and know what it feels like to travel in space! So okay, they said that its always air that keeps us alive, but I think our mind set is also one key factor to initiate living and existence, hence, we should never go
