There is a lot of controversy surrounding the prison system in the united states. Some of the controversies involve overcrowding, excessive costs, and the increase of violence. One of the biggest issue is solitary confinement. Although many way that solitary confinement is the only solution to keep and restrain violent inmates, because research shows that solitary confinement does more good than bad, harms the mental state of prisoners, and is more costly than the regular prisons, the practice should be abandoned and made illegal in all 50 states.
Many argue that the practice helps keep safe staff of the prison system as well as other inmates. However, their are other practices that may be used that have the same effect and result. This practices include pepper spray, the use of electronic restraint devices, and restraining chairs. But the truth of the matter is that solitary confinement produces more harm than good. Solitary confinement produces and increased mental illness in the minds of inmates. It is true that solitary confinement is one of the few disciple procedures that prisons and officers have available to inmates, but their are other options like restraining chair and pepper spray. In conclusions solitary confinement is pretty useful but their are many more reasons to abandon and leave the practice than to keep it in use in prisons.
