Why do we celebrate the 4th of July?
Most people in the United States celebrate the 4th of July, but do you know exactly why the holiday is so important to our country? Imagine how you would feel if someone older than you (maybe an older sister or brother) kept telling you what to do all of the time and kept taking more and more of your allowance. During the course of the Vietnam War, many infamous events occurred, including the disastrous My Lai Massacre. On the morning of March 16, 1968 the Charlie Company, led by Lieutenant William Calley, marched into the small village of My Lai in Vietnam prepared to fight the enemy; the whole operation took less than an hour to complete. In the end, more than five hundred people-mostly women, young children and infants, and the elderly-were killed (Trueman “My Lai Massacre”). A frantic cover-up by the American army followed in an attempt to hide it from the public eye. Although many were hoping for peace with England, Thomas Paine’s book titled Common Sense convinced the people that independence is what they need. The Fourth of July is much more than hamburgers and fireworks. On this day in 1776, 56 people signed a document declaring the thirteen United States of America’s independence from Great Britain. The Declaration of Independence was written mainly by Thomas Jefferson with input from other members of congress. The document was created to declare independence from the Tyrant British Rule which controlled the United States. After many efforts to detach from British Rule, this document was written to peacefully explain the reasons for which the states wanted to separate themselves. Jefferson effectively explains these reasons by using Aristotle’s style of rhetoric which includes ethos, pathos, and logos.…

Veterans Day isn’t about relaxing at home or hanging with friends. Instead, it’s about remembering those who served in the war and died, and honoring the military soldiers. It first started on November 11, 1919. Just one American Veteran is still alive today: 108-year-old Frank Buckles. As July began in 1776, the once prosperous relationship between the American colonies and Great Britain came to an end. As the tension grew, the colonists no longer withstood the tyranny, and as stated in the Declaration of Independence, the representatives of the colonies decided that when the situation reached a dire state, “it becomes necessary for one people to dissolve the political bands which connected them with another.” Before the document was written, Great Britain mistreated the colonists. The mother land imposed unjust laws unto the colonists, and the corpses continued to pile up. Despite efforts to have a peaceful agreement, King George III refused to listen and sentence the “traitors” to death. With the memories of the fallen still fresh in their mind, the representatives of the colonies created a group of writers to construct a radical declaration that stated and justify its independence. The group then decided that Thomas Jefferson, one of the…

After ratification, America was bound for it’s successful and still continuing experiment. There was some resistance to the official date, for example, historical records found that founding father and second US President, John Adams, personally believed that the correct date of our independence was July 2nd, and it has been documented that he declined invitations to attend the July 4th event in his earnest protest. Even though former President Adams didn’t agree when to celebrate, he agreed with the principal, which in the end, is what counts and makes us a united people. This is why we celebrate the Fourth on the 4th. It marks when America was all on the same page, and united as one nation and not as separate people.…
