4th Outlined Brigade Combat Team (ABCT)
Taking command of such a prestigious combat hardened unit, as is the 4th Armored Brigade Combat Team (ABCT), is truly an honor. I’m humbled at the opportunity and want to thank the outgoing command team for all that they’ve done. I believe the development of a leadership philosophy is a continuous ever changing process, comprised of life experiences and a person’s family upbringing. Although my personal leadership philosophy may change some overtime, the core aspects will remain the same. I believe a strong relationship with God and Family is essential for effective leaders. A strong spiritual foundation and a supportive loving Family will provide the mental strength required to lead Soldiers. In order to be a successful leader, you must first know how to be a good follower. Good leaders can effectively communicate their vision and objectives for an organization in a way that is understandable by each and every Soldier of the 4th ABCT. I will work tirelessly to guide this ABCT in meeting the intent of my vision and execution of the goals and objectives set during my command. I fully expect all members of the 4th ABCT, but specifically the Officers, Warrant Officers, and Non-commissioned Officers, to be of good character and treat others with …show more content…

Like all military officers, I was trained and groomed to be a leader from the time I raised my right hand and took the oath of office. The most important contribution to my success was the emphasis I placed on putting junior member’s needs before mine. I have a code that I live by and it has been very effective as a leader, “Take care of your people, and they will take care of…

LTC (P) Peter Owens will assume command of the 4th ABCT, a unit of which he previously commanded. The unit has recently returned from Afghanistan and will begin preparation for its deployment to the National Training Center (NTC). Using feedback provided by the Center for Army Lessons Learned, previous command climate survey and his observation; LTC (P) Owens has highlighted some significant issues he believes is affecting the unit’s ability to make decisions, communicate effectively, and operate as a cohesive team. LTC (P) Owens has concluded that the challenges facing the 4th ABCT are attributed to the organizational culture and climate because of the command’s failure to maintain a positive command climate. A commander is responsible for both the culture and climate of their unit. They set the tone and the behavior of the organization. As the in-coming commander, LTC (P) Owens has made it his number one priority to change the culture and climate of the organization by using Kotter’s Eight Step Change Model.…

    Army Leadership Process

Great leaders keep lines of communication open with their subordinate leaders and soldiers so situations can be understood and missions can be properly carried out. If changes to the plan or unanticipated conditions occur, great leaders will have contingency plans ready to go. They also take notes on what happens before, during, and after training/missions so they know what to improve in the future. In whatever actions are taken, there is always room for improvement, so great leaders are always ready to take constructive criticism and prepare for the next time they need to be in charge. They are always respectful of their soldiers and have the trust that their soldiers can properly and successfully carry out tasks at hand. Great leaders have ambition to achieve whatever goals are set for their group, and know realistically what groups can accomplish. They know the importance of timeliness and order, as well as self-discipline. Great leaders are appreciated in the Army because without them, tasks would not be done to the standard that we have set. In order to accomplish anything, there needs to be a drive and a will to achieve – great leaders are able to motivate their soldiers and keep them organized while tasks are completed. If a group is motivated about their task, they will perform better and get done quicker – motivated groups are more efficient. By following the Orders Process, great…

Yet it is a subject that doesn't get the attention it deserves today. My purpose with this letter is to stimulate some thoughts, and to put leadership in the forefront of your minds, where it belongs. I want you to read carefully and seriously what I have to say.…

Also as a teamleader it is your responsibility to teach that Soldier his or her job, you cant just give a Soldier a task and expect it to be completed to your standard. You need to explain the task to them, have them perform the task with your supervision and sometimes do this more than once or twice so that Soldier knows what your standards for that task are. Also as a teamleader it is up to you to teach your Soldiers to be responsibile as well as teaching them sel responsibility. It is your responsibility to teach your Soldiers to be responsibile for the things they do or the things they dont do. One way is this give them a task, explain the task, eplain how to complete the task then have the Soldier report back to you when the task is complete, then as the teamleader go double check and see if the task was completed to standard. Once that Soldier has earned your confidence and trust in him or her then start teaching them self responsibility.…

Military leadership isn’t simply about leading a group of individuals to accomplish the mission. On the surface it may seem this way; a barrage of loud, authoritative orders being barked out to brainwashed enlistees. This is how the preponderance of the masses that aren’t associated with the military may see us. However, it’s much, much more than that. Military leadership is about leading individuals to become something more than they ever thought they could be. To develop an individual into one of integrity and excellence. To help them reach goals they never thought possible and to consider a world beyond their own. Truly, there is no other form of leadership quite like it.…

Soldiers must be and act responsibly in every situation they may find themselves in, whether it’s in or out of uniform. Responsibility increases when soldiers believe that they have personal control over their mission performance, performing out of desire to do well instead of just following orders. There have been many studies that have suggested that when a Soldier feels that they have personal control over work performance the result is that the Soldier has a better task performance, better problem solving, and a higher persistence in accomplishing the task, more positive emotions and even better psychological and physical health. Responsibility and accountability are two of the main factors in being a successful Soldier in today’s U.S. Army. You must be a responsible soldier if you want to make it through deployment alive. Or even worse, if you fail to be responsible you could…

9). The change of personnel in our profession is inevitable, but regardless the continuous movement of personnel the culture of a unit should stay the same. If we create a culture of professionalism and pride in our job, that will be the standard to which all members will adhere to. It is too easy to just show up and get to work, but how can we ask our soldiers to do the best when we as leaders don’t exceed the expectations? It’s impossible a contagious culture of professionalism and pride will help shape those individuals into great future leaders of our…

A good leader should always have accountability for their soldiers but it starts on the lowest level. Anything to be ready and knowing the job that needs to be done. Accountability is more than just knowing your soldiers in formation. Accountability is knowing that your soldiers physical, mental, and spiritual needs are accounted for and taken into consideration; so they can be more functional as a unit, team, and be mission ready as the legs of the military; as the NCO’s being the backbone.…

Lack of this in a service member not only hinders the mission of the command but of the entire Army. LOYALTY, DUTY, RESPECT, SELFLESS SERVICE, HONOR, INTEGRITY, and PERSONAL COURAGE are Army core values that are instilled in each personnel’s life the instant that the oath of enlistment is pledged. Loyalty is to bear true faith and allegiance to the U.S. constitution, the Army, and other soldiers. Be loyal to the nation and its heritage. Duty is to fulfill your obligations. Accept responsibility for your own actions and those entrusted to your care. Find opportunities to improve oneself for the good of the group. Respect is to rely upon the golden rule. How we consider others reflects upon each of us, both personally and as a professional organization. Selfless Service is to put the welfare of the nation, the Army, and your subordinates before your own. Selfless service leads to organizational teamwork and encompasses discipline, self-control and faith in the system. Honor is to live up to all the Army values. Integrity is to do what is right, legally and morally. Be willing to do what is right even when no one is looking. It is our “moral compass” an inner voice. Personal courage is our ability to face fear, danger, or adversity, both physical and moral courage.…

Your key challenge in a leadership position is taking care of the Soldiers entrusted to your care. Soldiers are our nation’s most important military asset. One of the first and most important philosophies I would share with my troops is that I will always “Lead by Example”. In my military career I have had some exceptional leaders, and some toxic leaders. The reason this is of such importance to me is that I have seen more leaders lead with the inclination of “do as I say, not as I do.” If an NCO is wanting to be a great leader to their soldiers, how can they expect to accomplish that if they can’t even lead from the front and do what’s right themselves? I don’t think it is right to ask a soldier to do something that you haven’t done, or wouldn’t do yourself.…

True leadership is a quality many aspire, and few truly obtain... because in order to become a leader you must first learn to follow. Follow with an open mind, with focus, and with purpose. Being an effective leader means choosing the right course of action, all the while remembering those who will be affected by your decisions. A true leader has the confidence to stand alone, the courage to make tough decisions, and the compassion to listen to the needs of others. This type of person does not set out to be a leader, but becomes one by the quality of their actions and the integrity of their intent.…
