In a dry round bottom flask, 1.5mL of cyclohexanone was added with 5mL of methanol. The solution was cooled in an ice bath for 3 minutes after which 0.2g of sodium borohydride was measured and added to the solution. Upon mixing, a gas was formed (bubbles). The round bottom flask was removed from the ice bath and placed at room temperature. After 10 minutes at room temperature, 5.0mL of 3M NaOH and 2.0mL of distilled water was added to the solution.
Isolation and Characterization
The solution was placed in a 125mL separatory funnel in which 5mL of dichloromethane and 5mL of NaCl solution were added to it. The separatory funnel was shaken three times and the solution was left to sit until two distinct layers formed. The top aqueous
layer was translucent and oily while the bottom organic layer was transparent and colourless. The bottom layer was collected in a clean, dry and organic labelled 50mL Erlenmeyer flask. 5mL of dichloromethane was measured and added to the remaining layer in the separatory funnel. The separatory funnel was shaken three times and the solution was left to sit until two distinct layers formed. The top aqueous layer was translucent and oily while the bottom organic layer was transparent and colourless. The bottom layer was drained into the organic labelled 50mL flask and the remaining layer was drained into an aqueous labelled 50mL flask. The organic labelled flask contents were transferred back into the separatory funnel and 5mL of NaCl was added, shaken three times and the bottom layer was drained back into the organic labelled flask. Five scoops of anhydrous Na2SO4 was added to the organic containing flask and swirled. The solution was filtered through a flutted filter paper lined stemless funnel into a clean and dry pre-weighed and recorded 50mL Erlenmeyer flask. The solvent was placed on a hot plate on low setting and a gentle stream of air was used to evaporate the solvent. The flask was weighed and the mass was recorded. The yield of product was assessed and an IR spectrum of the product was taken.
The lab bench was cleaned up and materials were disposed of following safety guidelines.
