experiment procedure
I scaled up 0.120 g of camphor , the I added 1.0 ml of methanol in a 10-ml Erlenmeyer flask. I stirred with a glass stirring rod until the camphor has dissolved.
Then I added 0.10 g of sodium borohydride, after I started to boil the contents of the flask on a warm hot plate for 7 minutes then I left the reaction to calm.
I added 3.5ml of ice-cold water, then I collected the white solid by filtering , I transferred the solid to a 10-ml Erlenmeyer flask then I added 4ml of methylene chloride to dissolve the product, then dried the solution over granular anhydrous sodium sulfate. …show more content…
Calculation
camphor(MW= 152.23 g/mol)
Amount used = 1.00g
(0.120g)(1mol / 152.23g) = 0.000788 mol
Theoretical Yield
Isoborneol
(0.000788mol)(154.249g/mol product)
= 0.12159 g methyl
