The importance of this first step cannot be overstated. What it demands is that you articulate as specifically as possible the target you are aiming form, your final destination. By not setting a goal that is clear and specific, a student coming into the university or registering for a class or joining any social, religious or political network has put the cart before the horse and God knows where that will lead. Steve Covey (1999) uses the analogy of how one follows a blueprint when building a house. In Seven Habits of Highly Effective People, Covey further relates that a good way to achieve success in any endeavor is “to begin with the end in mind.”A pilot who takes off from Enugu Airport has the flight’s end in mind; the taxi driver who…

The three habits that inspired me the most are Habit 1: Think Proactive, Habit 4: Think Win-Win, and Habit 5: Seek First to Understand, Then to Be Understood. We need to renew ourselves daily. Covey wrote we need to take care of our heart, soul, mind, and body. To take care of the heart we need love, for the soul we need relaxation. For the out mind we need to gain knowledge, and for our bodies we need to stay fit and healthy. Habit seven is “Sharpen the Saw”. Taking care of ourselves is very important. Covey writes about our values. What are values? Values are the items we are proud of in life, and the people that we love. These people and items are true treasures. Just taking time to sit back, and look at all of the challenges we face, and to feel good about ourselves is amazing. We can however ask ourselves if we could do better. Everyone should say they can do better, however perfect is not an option. If we follow our values and the seventh habit it will make life easier, and happier. At the end of the day we need to be able to look at ourselves and smile. Covey wants us to take care of ourselves. “Abraham Lincoln was once asked “What would you do if you had eight hours to cut down a tree?” He replied, “I’d spend the first four hours sharpening my…
Charles Duhigg in The Power of Habit communicates how habits can transform our lives and change failure to success. In the chapter “Keystone Habits, or The Ballad of Paul O’Neill, ” Duhigg emphasizes the importance of incorporating keystone habits in the everyday routine. The chapter discusses small wins and identifying the difference between a keystone habit and a good habit. A keystone habit tends to cause a chain reaction; in other words, it triggers personal growth in a positive way. An example of a keystone habit was when Paul O’Neill stepped in as CEO of Alcoa and as a result of trying to prevent accidents, due to his value of workers, he created a mental process in which workers started to care more about work and therefore it brought a widespread adjustment that brought the people and the company together. O’Neill’s strategy in Alcoa made an impact on profits and also in work productivity; unlike other companies that only cared about profits, Alcoa began to focus on institutional habits and created a widespread swift that encouraged better work performance. Duhigg emphasizes the importance of creating the right habits to decode keystone habits, create widespread shifts and as a result accomplish small wins to convince themselves that bigger accomplishments are possible.…
