COMPANY

History

CEC International (CEC) was founded by Lam Wai Chun (the current Chairman) in 1979, as “Coils Electric Company”. Initially when the company was formed, it was a sole proprietorship company that assembled choke coils. In 1982, CEC established its first manufacturing facility in Zhongshan, China.

Manufacturing Business

In 1992, CEC began a full manufacturer of coils, and in 1997, the company started manufacturing ferrite cores, which is used as raw material for production of display tubes for IT services.

The company was listed in Hong Kong Stock Exchange in 1999.

Retail Business

In July 2010, CEC decided to branch out into retail business, opening their first “759 Store” in Hong Kong.

As of June 2013, it had opened 146 “759 Stores” in Hong Kong, recorded with more than 3,000 SKUs available, of which 54% were imported snack foods (as of FY13 sales).

However, of the alleged 3,000 SKUs, many of the SKUs are ad-hoc products that the Management parallel imported, and without continuation of supplies.
An advantage is that the customers will have fresh ‘surprises’ every time in their visit to “759 Store”, and will be trained to take a larger stock since the SKU may not be available in their next visit.

The disadvantage is that product loyalty and repeat purchase is limited.
Although it is reported in various interviews with the Management of CEC that they do not see local supermarkets and convenience stores as direct competitors due to differentiated product offerings, but looking at the product mix, we believe the stores are in direct competition with the following Chains: * Dairy Farm

Aldi was identified as a competitive force by the ACCC in 2008 and it has continued to grow. But its market share is still small. Costco has expanded, but is also a minor player. According to the ACCC, Metcash supplied stores had little ability to compete on price with Coles and Woolworths in 2008. This does not appear to have changed. And innovative competitors, like the specialist organic supermarkets and ‘high end’ gourmet outlets that have opened in the US, are almost non-existent in Australia.…

Using the small store concept has proven to be a valuable asset but has also produced a major trade off concerning inventory storage. DG continues to maintain disadvantages concerning replenishing highly demanded SKU’s and product mix pertaining to noncore merchandise. DG’s major competitor in the extreme value retail market is Family Dollar. Both companies continue to offer small stores and convenient shopping experiences. Wal-Mart serves as a potential threat based on its unique bargaining position that it has developed with its suppliers. Also, with the implementation of Wal-Mart Neighborhood Markets, the larger competitor is able to compete in a smaller, more convenient shopping environment as opposed to its usual niche of supercenters. Potential competitors that could offer a convenient shopping experience are large convenience stores such as RaceTrac. These larger convenient stores could become a valid competitor if they are able to negotiate comparable prices with their suppliers that would allow them to match DG prices.…

The Greek virgin goddess Athena, later called Minerva by the Romans, was the goddess of wisdom, war, strategy, crafts, and cities. Athena was an important member of the Olympic Pantheon. She was born fully armed from the forehead of Zeus, the chief god. Athena was Zeus's favorite child. He entrusted her with the Aegis, his breastplate, and with his thunderbolt. Athena's role as a goddess varied. She was a major warrior and took on many fierce battles. She was noted for her wisdom, which explained her close association with the owl, an ancient symbol of wisdom and reason. Athena longed for peace and wisdom rather than war.…

The grocery industry is a commoditized industry, which makes it difficult for grocers to sustain through differentiation. Buyer power is high and thus, cost leadership and operational efficiencies are critical. There is fierce competition amongst various grocery stores, with the main players such as Loblaw and A&P holding multi-banner stores in various market segments. Traditional grocery stores also lose some of their market share to drug stores, convenience stores and other retailers who have entered the industry. Threat of substitutes from fast-food and take- away outlets is not as prevalent, since many grocery stores have started stocking ready-to-eat meals and have deli services available for consumers. Competitive pressures are increasing in the industry with the potential entry of Wal-Mart and new delivery methods such as the internet.…
