9/11: A Comedy Analysis

When I was 2 years old, my mother and I were waiting for my father to get off a long-delayed flight. This was before 9/11 when entering the terminal without a ticket was permitted. An irate passenger waiting for the next flight to depart demanded that the crew let him board the plane immediately, apparently undeterred by the lack of an aircraft on the other side of the plate glass window. He filled the area with tension as he stomped around the seating area, ranting vociferously into a cell phone about the outrageous inconvenience the delay was causing to his very busy schedule. The flashy display of this cutting edge technology was proof positive that he was a VIP, at least in his own mind. To the delight of the other passengers and crew,
When I stepped on stage, I felt a giant knot form inside my stomach; however, as the jokes flowed and people laughed, the knot unraveled. Ever since that first talent show, I have been hooked. I performed comedy routines twice a year for the rest of elementary school and in annual shows for 6th and 7th grade. I put a lot of time and energy into making it seem unrehearsed and loved hearing the audience laugh. While scripted comedy routines are quite different from the daily jokes that I tell my family and friends, to me, they both serve the same purpose. Whether it be a scripted comedy routine in front of an audience, a funny story that I tell to my friends or a corny joke that I tell to my little brother, all of these forms of comedy help people by brightening their day. Hearing someone else laugh at one of my jokes is my favorite sound in the entire world because every time it happens, I know that I have made that person’s day
I am not sure exactly what impact I will make or how big it will be, but I do know that Harvard is where I would like to start making that impact. The most important thing that Harvard can offer me is a place where I am not just included, but also valued. Harvard is a place where people would want to have intellectual conversations with me, but more than that, Harvard is a place where I know I can share my aspirations and dreams with people who also want to become leaders and make an impact on the
