In the first chapter of “Along the Indian Road” we are introduced to what the road is and holds. The author explains the road as being at all ends of the spectrum. The comparisons he made where so detailed and dramatic. I enjoyed the description “Here are the highest most beautiful mountains in the world and the dullest plains stretching in the shimmering heat”. Everyone along the road is from a different culture or belief. He says that most of the population are Hindu.…

Don’t even get me started with merging. Holy crap! What an ordeal in California. Especially down here in San Diego. Yes, lets all travel on the right side of an 8 lane highway. (8 meaning 4 lanes per side). I mean come on, at the very least take the second to the right lane. Like I’ve always said since I was younger, I think the DMV has paid people to drive slow, rubber neck, break check, and avoid using their turning signals.…

Driving is inherently dangerous, especially when sharing the road with semi trucks. While you can mitigate this danger by increasing your following distance behind these big rigs, passing one on a multilane road forces you to drive within a few feet of it. Likewise, only a few feet separate you from oncoming trucks on a two lane road. Because you can't entirely avoid these situations, you have to trust that the truck doesn't lose control or otherwise harm you.…

Cruising on back roads there’s nothing in sight. No gas stations or any houses for that matter. You could hear the tops popping off a fresh beverage, and with that sound we knew our weekend had begun. Pandora had us crushing lyrics to every song on the playlist. With every sip you felt a rush of adrenalin pumping through your body like the bass coming from the speakers. Winding and twisting through the hills we creep closer and closer to our destination; Bear Kats, Lesterville Mo, a small town know for nothing more than its nice river accesses and great camping sites. A parade of cars filed into town, some pulling into the only liqueur store while others continued down the road. We hit the station meeting up with a few friends. We followed them down the last dirt road we say our prayers for a safe trip and a fun- filled weekend we would never forget.…

The radios blasting, your thumbs are tapping the steering-wheel, and your speedometer needle is between 75 or 80 as you drive on the interstate. "Instead of enjoying the ride a person is trying to get from point A to point B as fast as possible," is an opinion stated by the author about interstates and for most cases its true. Interstates bypass all the towns, cities, and highways that people would not notice unless they drove on the highways instead of the interstate. Interstates are long, mostly straight, flat roads that lead from one place to another. On the interstate, semis loom over you like giant beast, cascading you and your entire car in a shadow as it rides by. Certain towns, shops, or cultures can only be found on blue highways, roads written in blue on a map, these highways can take you somewhere you have never been before. "Driving on blue highways pull you back in time. You look around, and it is America in…

I was so tired, even attempting to keep my eyes open was a struggle. My whole body was achy after a hard day’s of school work, constantly staring at a computer screen and typing away, just to finish an essay. My pale white hands, frozen by the air conditioning blasting on high, were holding on to the steering wheel like a person gripping the edge of a cliff, hoping not to fall into a dark abyss. My brain wanted to give in, to remain in the sleep that I kept dangerously drifting in and out of. I took a look outside, the road looking meek. The rows if brush hoars any objects spattered off the road by vehicles in the August sun. It felt like I was going around in a circle, my tires skating around the bends and turns of the road. I felt maybe I should slow down so I do not lose…

Ultimately, the car ride felt like a lifetime with nothing to look at out the window. The drive on the way there consisted of small town, sugar cane fields, orchid farms, and mango groves. Blue Highways, which spent 42 weeks on the New York Times bestseller list in 1982–83, is a chronicle of a three-month-long road trip that Least Heat Moon took throughout the United States in 1978 after losing his teaching job and separating from his first wife. Experts categorize this book as "travel literature". It is a travel book, for William traveled 13,000 miles, as much as possible on secondary roads (often drawn on maps in blue, especially in the old-style Rand McNally road atlas) and tried to avoid cities. Living out of the back of his van which has been named “Ghost Dancing”, he visited small towns such as Nameless, Tennessee; Hachita, New Mexico; and Bagley, Minnesota to find places in America untouched by fast food chains and interstate highways. The book records encounters in roadside cafés as well as his search for something greater than himself. He describes places, converses with people, learns or reviews history. As may be expected, the places are common and strange, mundane and magical. Some are pleasing and peaceful; others evoke indignance in William, unpleasantness and judgment. Most of the people are kind, some of them are wise. Some are alive with vitality and hope, others ghosts or near ghosts. The events that caused him to put his usual life on hold, and take up…

By the looks of things, there were not many people out, and there were very few cars moving around town. Other than the cars parked along the sides of the road, it was as if I had the roads to myself. I had been driving for a little over five months, and I had taken these same roads countless numbers of times without incident. I was about to find out, though, that this time would be different.…
