Coal : Wyoming is the nation's leading coal producer. The nation’s top 10 coal mines are situated here and has the world’s largest surface coal mining operations near Gillette. In 1868 the Union pacific railroad opened the first coal mine in carbon county. It was named Carbon county because extensive coal deposits were found there. Most of Wyoming’s coal mines are found in the powder river basin. There has been some disasters in the coal mines too.
Oil and Natural gas:
Wyoming stands 2nd in production of Natural gas. Natural gas is used mostly for heating homes and Businesses. It has 5 oil fields in the top 100 US fields.Crude oil wells have been found in most of the state counties.These wells
yield about 55 million barrels of oil a year. Crude oil is more important to make gasoline, paint, plastics and other petroleum goods. The extraction of natural gas from coal bed methane began during the 1990’s but the recent lower natural gas prices made these coal bed methane very uneconomical.Most of the refineries are located near the city of Casper.
Trona:
Wyoming has the largest reserve of Trona in the world.Trona is used for making glass,paper,soap,toothpaste etc.
