A Change Of Heart About Animals
Visualize having someone mistreat you because they don’t feel the pain they’re making you go through. As humans we are capable of letting others know when we are in pain and we are also capable of standing up for ourselves. Animals aren’t able to do that so they are treated unfairly, like if they didn’t feel any pain at all. Although many believe that animals shouldn’t be treated like humans, my goal is to convince my classmates that we should improve the way we treat animals. To begin with, why should we make animals suffer before killing them? In the article “A Change of Heart about Animals” Jeremy Rifkin states “And for the thousands of animals subjected each year to painful laboratory experiments? Or the millions of domestic animals
raised under the most inhumane conditions and destined for slaughter and human consumption?” How selfish of us to do experiments on animals for our own benefit. We can discover other ways to do experiments and not test on animals because it is painful for them and we need to take that into consideration before doing those harmful experiments. We also can’t raise animals under inhumane experiments just because they are destined for slaughter. Most humans would rather die in their sleep where they can’t feel any pain instead of suffering before their death. Therefore we shouldn’t make animals suffer because they are going to be killed and instead treat them fairly because they do have feelings just like us. Animals are more like us than we had ever imagined. Although many may not believe it, it has been proven that animals have feelings just like us. Jeremy Rifkin states “Studies on pigs’ social behavior funded by McDonald’s at Purdue University, for example, have found that they crave affection and are easily or denied playtime with each other.” Animals experience all these different kinds of feelings and we shouldn’t ignore it.
