A Child Called It Summary
The book, A Child Called “It” by Dave Pelzer, is a true story of a man’s childhood from the ages of 4 to 12 and how things went from good to bad in a matter of a few years due to his mother’s abusive tendencies toward him. It is a moving story of how this child mustered up the strength to keep living, despite his harsh circumstances. This book, for the most part, is in chronological order and each chapter is a significant event that happened throughout the few years he was under his mother’s care, before he was taken away by Child Protective Services. The first chapter is the only chapter that is not in chronological order, because it starts out with his rescue from his abusive household. Throughout the chapter, one can see the signs of obvious child abuse and neglect. His clothes have “more holes than Swiss cheese” (Pelzer, 1995, p. 6) and he notes that the school nurse go through a normal routine of checking his body for new bruises. He flinches when someone pats his head, which he has grown accustomed to because of being beaten so often, and jumps in his chair when someone raises their voice. He cannot look someone in the eye, even someone he trusts, such as the school nurse (p. 8). When he tries explain to the police officer why he thinks his mother does this to him, he replies that he deserves what he …show more content…
The book serves as a message to those who have experienced child abuse, telling them that they are not alone. It also serves as a reminder to people like me that this is an occurring tragedy that happens and that we need to keep our eyes peeled for kids that are in distress. Dave had lived with this horrible lifestyle for years. He had burn marks, bruises, stab wounds, scratches, black eyes, and bloody noses, yet no one said anything. No one noticed. No one took action until he was so broken down that he was so close to losing hope in humanity. It is our duty as children of God to look out and care for each

A Child Called “It” by David Pelzer is his own autobiography of his life as a child being abused by his alcoholic mother, Catherine Roerva Pelzer, who isolates him from the family, then abuses him, and nearly killed him through starvation, poisoning, and once stabbing him. Since Mother starved him for days, he began to steal food in order to survive, and when she finds out he has stolen food, she abuses him with her own “games”. Dave reflects on the “good times” in his childhood, because Mother was once a wonderful, loving mom, but the drinking habit, illness, and Father being gone took over her life, leaving both emotional and physical scars on her child which will haunt him for life. His father, Stephen Joseph Pelzer, a fireman in San Francisco, is a frightened man who as watches Dave is beaten, starved, and humiliated. Mother has stopped calling him by name; instead she would refer him as “the boy” to “it”. He was starved for 10 consecutive days, stabbed, forced to eat his brother’s diaper and a spoonful of ammonia, burned over a gas stove, stayed in the bathroom with ammonia resulting in a near fatal outcome, smashed his face into the mirror while screaming "I'm a bad boy", lying in the bathtub naked with freezing water for hours.…

Many people use their childhood as a way to justify the means of their adulthood. This is especially the case when we talk about abused or neglected children. Statistics comes to show that children who suffered from an abusive parent tend to grow up and become the abusers themselves. These children might even become involved in criminal activity. This was not the case for Dave Pelzer. When Dave Pelzer woke up one morning to an abusive mother, he didn’t use this as a reason to behave a certain way in the future. Instead he took it to himself as a duty. He took it to himself that as a survivor of this tragic event to help others and to spread awareness through his memoirs and self-help books.…

Child abuse. The words on its own sound horrific! According to the Federal Child Abuse Prevention and Treatment Act (CAPTA) amended by the Keeping Children and Families Safe Act of 2003 (Childhelp.org October 2010), it defines child abuse and neglect as, at the minimum the following: Any recent act or failure to act on the part of a parent or caretaker which results in death, serious physical or emotional harm, sexual abuse or exploitation; (Childhelp.org 2010) or an act of failure to act which presents an imminent risk of serious harm (Childhelp.org October 2010). Most Federal and State child protection laws primarily refer to cases of harm to a child caused by parents or other caregivers (Childhelp.org 2010). Increasing public awareness of the need to ensure the safety and welfare of children led to the passage of the first Federal child protection legislation, the Child Abuse Prevention and Treatment Act (CAPTA), in 1974 (Childhelp.org October 2010). Child abuse has had a extensive history. Children unfortunately have been subjects of abuse by their parents, and for many centuries laws failed to protect them. A historical case of child abuse in the 1870’s caught the nation’s attention when a then eight-year old orphan named Mary Ellen Wilson stated she was suffering daily whippings and beatings at her then foster home (Childhelp.org October 2010). There was no organization to protect abused children, so she petitioned the American SPCA – Society for Prevention of Cruelty of Animals (Childhelp.org October 2010). Wilson stated (Childhelp.org October 2010) that “Animals were protected , but children were not, and that children were members of the animal kingdom, and must therefore be protected.” It was because of these statements that the ASPCA…
