A Comparison Of Macon Dead And Milkman's Journey
A journey can be different for everyone and can show them who they really are. Macon Dead, Pilate, and Milkman all experienced journeys that changed their life. Their journies teach us about never giving up on family, discovering the truth, believing in yourself,
Milmans trip starts with looking for gold then turned into a journey of finding his family. When Macon tells Milkman that the gold must be still in the cave, Milkman heads to Pennsylvania to go look for it. Quote
During his journey, Milkman starts to learn about his family. In Pennsylvania, Milkman meets Reverend Cooper, a close friend of Macon Dead, and tells stories about Macon. Reverend tells Milkman that the Butlers, a wealthy white family, were responsible for Macon I’s death.

After the waters have settled Macon Dead talks to Milkman about why he struck his mother and the conflict that takes place between her father and him. Later Milkman finds Guitar at Tommy’s Barber shop discussing two recently murdered boys, Emmet Till, a black Northerner killed in Mississippi for flirting with a white girl, and a white boy killed in their town as part of a retaliation. The relationship goes on for twelve years until Milkman reaches age thirty-one. Milkman tries to abandon the relationship breaking due to the fact that they are cousins and “she needed a steady man who she could marry her” (Morrison 98), breaking Hagar’s heart. As a result, Hagar attempts multiple times to kill Milkman. The abandonment of the relationship caused a dramatic toll on Hagar’s emotions. Milkman’s abandonment towards Hagar is an example of the burden his mother has a left on him reflecting, somewhat influenced by his father, on Hagar.
