During the hunt, Milkman begins to ruminate about the previous day and how he "deserved" to be treated better than the way the blacks treated him in the bar. However, he soon came to realize that though the others' hostility was mostly unwarranted, he did not deserve to be loved by everyone either. Milkman finally realizes that all the love he received, he took for granted. Though his lack of appreciation is evident to any reader, Milkman lacks the maturity to recognize his egotistical nature until this point in the book. Recalling his insensitivity to Hagar, Milkman ultimately comes to the conclusion that "if a stranger could try to kill him, surely Hagar, who knew him and whom he'd thrown away like a wad of chewing gum after the flavor was gone—she had a right to try to kill him too" (280). The extreme connection Milkman draws between Hagar and a mere piece of gum shows the extent to which Milkman feels guilt about his past actions. Interrupting Milkman's breakthrough, Guitar suddenly appears and tries to strangle Milkman from behind. Near death, he "saw a burst of many-colored lights dancing before his eyes. When the music followed the colored lights, he knew he had just drawn the last sweet air left for him in the world" (283). Guitar's attempt at murder results in the death of the old Milkman and his reincarnation as a new being, no…

Most connections between people begin with learning the other person’s name. When exchanging names doesn’t occur then it usually means that either one or both of the people want to keep things impersonal. Keeping things impersonal can have its advantages but it can also create risks. Names make a connection and without that connection people become objects, titles, or ideas. When a person is given a title in place of a name they become the title instead of a person.…

What’s in a name? Parents often put a great deal of thought into picking out a name for their children in hopes that others view it as a reflection of their uniqueness and a representation of their future aspirations. Authors also put a great deal of thought into their characters’ names and supporting objects to help the reader understand the meaning of their writings. Nathaniel Hawthorne uses duplicity in the characters of Young Goodman Brown and Faith; and also in the setting of the forest to reinforce the coming of age that is taking in place in Young Goodman Brown.…

Krakauer wrote that Chris McCandless was, "green, and he overestimated his resilience, but was sufficiently skilled to last for sixteen weeks on a little more than his wits and ten pounds of rice"(Krakauer 182). In this quote it seems that Krakauer thought that McCandless was well equipped with his skills, so that made moderately prepared to survive in any situation. I feel that McCandless was rather prepared, yet again he never could have been fully prepared for the unexpected. My opinion is that McCandless was vaguely aware of the struggles that he would encounter in the Alaskan wilderness such as his epiphany that "happiness is only real when shared" was realized when his body was dying of starvation. I believed that he found what he was…
