A Country Song 'My Old Man' By Zac Brown Band
“My Old Man”
“My Old Man” is a country song written by Zac Brown Band. In the song he talks about how his father raised him, taught him, and made him who he is now. He expresses his grief and gratitude towards his father. The artist also demonstrates how he is now able to teach his own son, now that he knows how to from his father’s lessons. “My Old Man’s” theme is a warm father-son relationship.
There are many different literary devices that help to give the song a deeper meaning. Here are a few different examples. “He was a Giant, And I was just a kid.” This is a hyperbole because his father was not actually a giant, but the kid exaggerates to make him seem like one. This shows that the kid thinks he is a fatherly figure and acknowledges

The poem itself is discussing a man's journey from birth to death and how all around him life is interpreted by material possessions. At the beginning of the first stanza, the sentences have been made very short and simple, as if to demonstrate the thoughts of a new born child. The first voice that the baby hears when he is born is Bobby Dazzler, one of Australia's first game shows. The very first thing that the baby hears is not the voice of his mother, nor the voice of his father, but the voice of materialism. This first stanza instantly creates the feeling of a home in the 1950s, where television was something new. The ellipsis that connects the first and second stanzas demonstrates a change in time, in this case, a change of a couple of years.…

Both poems use metaphors to describe the speaker’s feelings towards the other person in the relationship, for example in Quickdraw “And this is love, high noon, calamity, hard liquor in the old Last Chance saloon.” Then in Praise Song for My Mother “You were water to me deep and bold and fathoming.”…

The relationship between father and son seems to be one of tension and distance as conveyed to the readers at first. For instance, the narrator "looks down" at his father digging, as shown in the second stanza, which can either be interpreted in two ways. One way is that the narrator is situated above his father who is in the fields digging, or another way in which the narrator looks down upon his father and sees no value in his occupation. As shown, the narrator's position is above his father because he has an education, which is reinforced from the start: the narrator is a writer, and most likely received more education than his father who is a potato farmer. The mood reinforces the distant relationship between the father and the son. The mood of the poem at first is solemn and grave. This is exemplified in the onomatopoeia; "a clean, rasping sound" In…

The second verse begins by saying that ‘you’ (the mother) is at zero end (of the tape) and goes on to give us the idea that the child is unwinding the tape, taking measurements, reporting back to her and then unreeling the tape again. This is metaphoric of the mother being his ‘base’ and him, living his life, returning to her and leaving her again. The unreeling tape is referred to as ‘unreeling years’ which I take to mean the memories that the mother and son hold. This is illustrated further by the use of the words; ‘Anchor. Kite.’ meaning that she is the steady influence and he is young and free.…

The first verse of the third stanza - ‘His Polish friends -’ again shows a sense of ownership and belonging by the use of possessive pro noun. It also states a cultural reference and shows how the son feels as if he doesn’t belong. ‘Talking, they reminisced…’ this line reflects how this group of men hold a shared past and highlights the sense of ‘brotherhood’. All of this ‘Did not dull the softness of his blue eyes’, which again signifies the love and admiration the son possesses for his father. Mild and subtle expression is used to symbolise his character through the depiction of his son. Even when…

Creedence Clearwater Revival 's (CCR) song titled "Fortunate Son" is a powerful protest song that represents the out cry of a working class people seeing the conflict in Vietnam as a “rich man’s war and a poor man’s fight” (Goldberg 46). The Vietnam War spawned more than its fair share of protest records and at times it seems that the 1960’s antiwar movement became almost synonymous with 1960’s rock n ' roll; however, "Fortunate Son" may well have been the definitive antiwar anthem. John Fogerty uses imagery, repetition, idioms, and simile to demonstrate to the audience; class resentment, clashing worldviews, and assumptions about the nature of America 's place in the world.…

This gives the audience an idea of the intensity that the little boy is experiencing. Roethke the moves to the third stanza were he incorporates a metaphor “At every step you missed” meaning because of the fathers bad habits he missed parts of his sons life that were important to the son. The author whether he meant to generalize the sons age or not, he gives us a clue of this when he says” My right ear scraped a buckle “. You should notice that Roethke uses the syllable “a” instead of “his” this points out the boys love for his father, and his attitude that his dad could do no wrong. As the author moves to produce the forth stanza he emphasizes the fact that his dad did work hard with imagery “With a palm caked hard by dirt”. Roethke then moves to create an assonance effect by rhyming “hard by dirt “and “to your shirt”. The author then ends with capitalizing on that perfect parent attitude, “Still clinging to your shirt “. This could also be a son wishing for the return of his father. The lucidity and cheerfulness of the rhythm succeed to some extent in hiding the pathos and resentment in the poem. It also exhibits cause and effect because of dad’s alcoholism, the boy’s life was harder than those with sober parents.…

In this line, the speaker uses the word “beat.” In these lines, this shows the father’s physical abusive nature and roughness towards the boy since he is drunk. This would be a negative memory for his son since his father is “beating” on his head. But in the last two lines of that same stanza, the speakers says “then waltzed me off to bed/ still clinging to your shirt” (15-16). In these two lines, the speakers tell about a positive memory. It shows a bond between the father and the son because the boy must actually love his father since he is clinging to his shirt as he takes him to…

People either idealize or resent the upper echelon of society. The song despises the upper class but still thinks the grass is greener on the other side and the other shows him in a more positive light. The song focuses on the miscreant behavior, and the poem talks about idealizing his image. The biggest difference is the view of the upper class the poem holds him in reverence and the song curses him, but both the song and the poem wish for what he had.…

We were sent out into the camp to reflect on what we’d heard. I laid myself down in the cool green grass of a warm August night, staring up at the swirling constellations, and I began to cry. This song and message were meant to have us reflect on our relationship with God - which they did - but I could not get my mind off the obvious: this song is about my real, earthly father and myself, not just my heavenly one.…
