In “A Good Man Is Hard to Find” by Flannery O’ Conner, she expresses much irony between the Grandmother & the escapee. Initially, I thought the Grandmother was just a little bit pushy in trying to get what she wanted. She didn’t want to travel to Florida with her son, Bailey & his family, she wanted to go to Tennessee to visit with other family members. She had read in the paper that their was a murderer on the lose & that he was headed to Florida. She use the story to try to influence Bailey not to take them all there but instead to go to Tennessee, claiming that she would never take her own children to such a place that the “misfit” was going to be at for fear of endangering her children! Grandmother tried to guilt Bailey into siding with her & changing her mind. Of course, she was given the option of staying home, but even June Star, her granddaughter said, grandmother would never stay home, she would never let them go anywhere without her. June Star was almost sounding as if she didn’t want her grandmother to go, but once they all started on the trip to Florida, it was the grandmother that manipulated her grandchildren into whining to get their father to take a stop along the way to see an old house that has a secret panel in it. She enticed the children with a lie to get what she wanted, but as they traveled down the old dirt road, she begun to realize that the house she remembered wasn’t in Georgia at all, it was back in Tennessee, but before she really had a chance to tell, the cat that she was hiding jumped out & onto Bailey while he was driving causing the car to spin out of control. & roll. Bailey’s wife & the baby went flying out of the car, the rest managed to escape without serious injury as well.…

Right from the beginning, the reader can see the first characteristic, entitlement; appear in the Grandmother’s personality by her behaviors. The story starts with the family preparing for a vacation to Florida. The Grandmother wants to go to Tennessee and feels she is entitled to do so. However, she can’t convince any of the family members, especially her son Bailey. The day of the trip, Bailey tells his mother that she cannot take the cat with her in the car. The Grandmother feels she is entitled to do what she wants and bring her pet so she stores the cat in a basket with a newspaper on top and puts it in the back of the car before anyone else gets in. This feeling of entitlement leads to the Grandmother’s death at the end of the short story. She accidently scares the cat who escapes the basket and jumps onto Bailey’s neck. He drives the car into a ditch where later, the Misfit and his friends appear. The Grandmother’s feelings of entitlement get herself and her family murdered.…

In Flannery O’Connor’s “A Good Man is Hard to Find”, multiple themes are conveyed through her use of foreshadowing and irony as well as a consistent point of view. The story centers around the major conflict between the Misfit and the grandmother along with her family. This story can be viewed in many ways because of the unusually large number of themes used in this story ranging from religion to society and class. Foreshadowing can be found throughout the story leading up to the brutal execution of the family beginning with the grandmother’s comment on her elaborate outfit for the road trip to the “hearse-like” (373) vehicle the Misfit drove. O’Connor’s clever use of irony stands out in this short story. She uses a wide range of irony to get across her message. Third person point of view was used for the short story. The point of view was limited because the reader is informed of only the grandmother’s…

She was an elderly woman living on the way she was brought up explaining to her grandchildren how she would act if she was their ages. “In my time,” said the grandmother, folding her thin veined fingers, “children were more respectful of their native states and their parents and everything else. People did right then” (368). She enlightened her grandchildren on intriguing facts along the trip that were presumed true. The narrator states, “The grandmother said she would tell them a story if they would keep quiet. When she told a story, she rolled her eyes and waved her head and was very dramatic” (369). She then goes on to tell the grandchildren about a house with a secret panel where the family silver was located. She mistakenly thought the house was in Georgia, so her son drives the car down a long dirt road in the middle of nowhere to look for this house. The grandmothers’ cat jumps up out of the back seat and scares her son who then wrecks the car. The grandmother then remembers that the house was in Tennessee and not Georgia. The grandmother continues to lead her family into trouble by trying to make their vacation road trip as interesting as…

One of the utmost unforgettable lines from “A Good Man Is Hard to Find” originates from the Misfit when he says, “She would have been a good woman if it had been someone there to shoot her for every minute of her life (O'Connor).” Flannery O’Connor’s illustration of Christianity can be seen in within this text. Certainly, the plot ends with an appalling conclusion, and this leaves the reader with liberty to understand the central idea of this story. “A Good Man Is Hard to Find” is largely influenced by divine authority and other elements within the story.…

In Flannery O'Connor's short story "A Good Man is Hard to Find," the gruesome ending comes as quite a shock. But, upon a second read, signs of an ominous end permeate the work. Hints of the family's tragic finale exist throughout the plot until the time of the first murder. Candidly, after reading “A Good Man is Hard to Find” by Flannery O’Connor for the first time, I was completely shocked by the violence and the story’s tragic ending. While, I grasped elements of the foreshadowing she used throughout the story, such as mentioning the dangerous Misfit was “aloose” in the first paragraph, Red Sammy’s reference to two men failing to pay for gas, and the odd name and spelling of the town of “Toombsboro” the family was outside of when the Grandmother awakened and mentioned the plantation (Kirszner & Mandell, 2012). Nevertheless, I failed to fully anticipate the impending doom and the brutality O’Connor had planned for the family. As a result, the stunning ending was as disorienting as a bright, burst of light flashing in my eyes…

Throughout, the story we see the grandmother being manipulative, deceitful, and selfish. Aruther Breatha, the author of the article “O’Connor’s A Good Man is Hard to Find” even compares the grandmother morally and philosophically to the serial-killing Misfit (Breatha 246). The grandmother is seen being manipulative when she is trying to change her son Baily’s mind about going to Florida, so she can go to Tennessee. She is described as “seizing at every chance to change Bailey’s mind” (O’Connor 364). She even tries to make Baily feel bad about taking his children in the direction where a criminal is a loose (O’ Connor 364). She has no care, for what the family as a whole want to do, and is only concerned, with what she wants to do, and where she wants to go on vacation. When all her attempts to stop the family from going to Florida fail, she starts to become deceitful. The first of her deceitful action is bring the cat along even though Baily said not to so, then when the family is on the road the grandmother want to stop at an old plantation she used to visit as a child. Baily does not want to stop so she lies and tell the children that “There was a secret panel in this house” (O’Connor 368), and that it was filled with silver. This of course drives the children to bug, Baily, and the grandmother get what she wants. Once, the family turns down…
