The root of my culture stems from interacting with my family, institutions and intergenerational practices. The social construction of my race, ethnicity, and gender positively impact my culture because society has labeled me a minority in all of those areas, thus excluding me from the dominant culture, thus making me stronger. Groups were socially constructed to create apartness to make unity a challenge. Yet, still I am comfortable with myself and I do not let outside sources alter my perception of who I am, where I am, or who I will be due to my familial impact. Social workers embrace diversity. In the social work profession, I will work with multiple different race, ethnicities, cultures, as well as identities. In working with different populations I have to have an understanding of the way they perceive themselves, the way others perceive them, and the way society perceives them.
