This paper is the first part of the Teaching Project assignment. I will present the main teaching objective accompanied by some specific goals, and a brief overview of the actual project.
For the teaching project, I have decided to orchestrate a pre-operative teaching session for a patient undergoing a minor procedure such as an inguinal hernia repair, as an elective day surgery.
The general objective: To prepare the patient for his surgical experience.
Specific objectives are divided into two sections, pre-operative
and post-operative care.
For the Pre-operative care objectives: • following the teaching session, the client will state at what time he will stop eating and drinking and remain without food(cognitive domain) • following the teaching session, the client will demonstrate how and when to use the chlorhexidine sponges to wash (psychomotor and cognitive domains)
For the post-operative care objectives: • following the teaching session, the client will state the signs and symptoms of a surgical wound infection (cognitive domain) • following the teaching session, the client will summarize the effects on activities of daily living (ADL) (cognitive and affective domains) • following the teaching session, the client will verbalize/summarize how to self-medicate (cognitive domain) This teaching session would be conducted with the client and any other significant person that he/she wishes to have present. In order to reinforce learning, I would use visual aids and written verbal instructions.
This teaching session would normally be conducted approximately 2 weeks before the patient’s surgery at the Pre-Operative (“pre-op”) clinic located in a hospital setting. At the time of the visit, the client would also have to undergo a few standardized testing such as blood test and a chest x-ray.
