In the twentieth century a British academic writer Nicholas tucker, traced the changes that the First World War during six-years did on the children’s books; he came out with many social and political changes. During the war comics and a few numbers of novels toke the theme of the war, even though there was no political talk in children’s books or social issues. Children’s books shared many values of the past, rather than looking forward, also a problem raised in Britain, it was unable to finance its own children’s books and many authors toke the curve of writing about the middle-classes values.

Roll of Thunder, Hear My Cry is an autobiographical novel of Taylor’s life in the Mississippi in 1930s. It is a unique novel because it talks about the social life of African American community and its history at a time when African American were trivialized and humiliated. Taylor’s novel contributes to develop and extend the history of African American children’s literature.
Taylor provides situations from her life. Not only she talks about her experiences and adventures in Mississippi and the relationships of African American families but she also talks about the racial discrimination and the harsh practices which were imposed on Logan family by white people. She heard about the story of Negro boy who was saved from the lynch mob. So, she was inspired by this lynching to write her novel. Taylor evokes black hero and heroines and reflects their heritage. Taylor made Cassie the speaker of the black-American people history, with the assessment of child narrator Cassie history was not complex for a child or young adult reader to understand and engage with Cassie’s feelings, Taylor made her readers an eye-witness of that history.
Also she wanted to change the fact of them being slaves to the white society and powerless in front of them, she made Cassie an example of an aware independent young black woman with formal education (from school) and informal education (knows her history), that participate in the society and makes a differences.
