Today, 314.5 million people call themselves Americans. Each of them, with God permitting, will make the journey to old age. However, in this huge set of individuals, roughly fifteen percent of adults over the age of twenty-five have not received a high school diploma (“Educational Attainment in the United States: 2009”). By itself, this percentage feels rather small, and so we as Americans pride ourselves in our educational system. After crunching the numbers, however, this measly percentage actually represents twenty-nine million Americans, twenty-nine million individuals who lack an accomplished high school education. Aristotle would be displeased to say the least. In 2008, then senator Barack Obama delivered a speech to the Mapleton Expeditionary School of the Arts titled “What’s Possible for our Children.” Though intended for his election campaign, the speech also reflected this introduction’s attitude, calling attention to the gaping holes in American education. More specifically, however, Obama promoted educational reform based on a three-point platform: “fixing” No Child Left Behind (an act which encourages state standardized tests to measure and regulate primary and secondary education in the United States), encouraging teacher reforms and furthering teaching…

He grew up with a single mom and his grandparents, which in today’s era is common. When a person grows up with his or her grandparents, they are taught the old ways- respect, honesty, and discipline. This has helped him become a role model and a respectable person that everyone can look up to. Barack Obama also grew up with humble ways. Since his family struggled to make ends meet, he learned that life was not easy. However he developed the character qualities of self-reliance, self confidence, respect, and dignity. He worked his way through life by taking loans for college, and working to pay them off. He as well mentions that he rejected job opportunities at Wall Street, so then he could instead travel to devastated parts of the nation due to major company lay-offs. Due to his learning’s from his early life and to his dedication to his people, Barack Obama is portrayed as a common man who will represent the common people of the United States of…

I chose Barack Obama’s first inauguration, as it was one of the capacious events that I think to occur in my lifetime. Barack Obama’s speech during his inauguration talked of forging a more united “post racial” America. President Obama is an extraordinary figure who has done some good things in bad times, and some great things under impossible circumstances. As the first black president he has faced enormous difficulties and has had to weather a steady downpour of bad faith from the right wing and racist resistance from bigoted quarters of the country. He has been torn between America’s noble ideals of democracy and its cruel realities of race — a tension he rode into office, and one that occasionally defeated his desire to reconcile the best and worst halves of the nation he governs.…

Moreover, Barack Obama in a press conference reflecting on his first 100 days in office, was asked about his plans to address unemployment in the Black and Latino communities and his response was troubling, exhibiting a foreshadowing of what was to come, of those expecting radical changes, which would disappoint his most ardent supporters (p. 170). Obama responded by announcing that his focus was on bringing the economy back, after the disastrous legacy of George W. Bush, and using the strategy that that will help all people who will benefit by the positives of a strong economy (175). This set the tone for the entire Obama Presidency, the idea that the government will not specifically address issues that target Blacks but will advance programs…

One device Obama uses more effectively in his speech is pathos, which appeals to a person’s emotion. During Obama’s speech, “We Can Do Better,” he tries to persuade citizens to unite and agree that the United States needs stricter gun safety laws. Obama starts his speech by discussing each victim of the tragic shooting in Tucson, Arizona. He goes into detail about each of their lives and how it ended. By sharing these details, Obama allows the audience to see each victim as a real person by giving them a name, a family, a personality, and a story. Also, each victim’s story ends so abruptly, symbolizing how their lives really did end too quickly, adding to the sorrow of the audience. He, in a way, makes it personal for the listener. Obama makes the listener look…

Obama is known by many as the people’s president, with his goal of strengthening the middle class, and opposing trickledown economics. He effectively communicates with the lower and middle class demographic because he radiates a feeling of humility and his diction is simple, clear, and effective. Obama can easily connect with this demographic because one of his first jobs was a community organizer in Chicago. Some economists claim that the middle class is shrinking; however it still makes up the majority of America. Obama has many strong supporters because he grew up living a modest lifestyle, so he is able to identify with the working class, and therefore able to voice their woes, and offer solutions.…

Is it because he understands what the American people want in a president and he uses that information? Is it because he is never boring? Or could it be that he was just meant to be a leader and knows to be a good leader you also have to be a good speaker? I believe that it is all of the above. John Edwards spoke with passion and a great understanding during the entire event. He showed no signs of weakness and to me that is very important when being in the public eye. When I first started to watch the speech, I really had no idea if John was a Democrat or a Republican. John really does not make his political side a reason for what he is about. John clearly showed that he is only there for the people and that is something we need in America. I have posted the video on my website I have for all of my friends to see because it was such a great speech. I would recommend everyone to watch one of John’s speeches at least one time before the 2008…
