our next president.
Michelle Obama was also very convincing when she talked about the importance of our vote. I think that many Americans don’t have much faith in their ability to influence our politics when it comes to voting, this sentiment is clearly reflected in our low voter turnout of just about 60% in presidential elections. Finally I think the timing of this speech was perfect as the news about Trump's alleged sexual assault are still circulating. Michelle Obama couldn’t have been more damning towards Donald Trump.
Henry Giroux’s explains that schools are being modeled after prisons and that there are "Kids whose every behavior is criminalized." This observation couldn’t be any more accurate. As I was watching this video I couldn’t stop thinking about a recent incident in which a 14 year old student was arrested at Graham Park Middle School by the school policeman after he rightfully took a milk carton from the school cafeteria. The student was in the
free lunch program, so he wasn’t committing a crime. When the policeman approached him and accused him of stealing it, the student explained that he was in the free lunch program. According to the policeman, the young man was disrespectful and resisted interrogation, so he was arrested. He is now being charged with disorderly conduct and LARCENY for getting a milk carton that he was entitled to. There are so many ways this situation could've been handled, but as we often see, the policeman escalated the situation by arresting the kid. How disrespectful does a kid have to be for a policeman to arrest him on school grounds? I don’t think he has to be extremely disrespectful, he just has to be a minority. This is the kind of behavior that is being criminalized, specially when it comes to minorities. Given our current political and social climate, it doesn’t come as a surprise that the 14 year old I was talking about is, in fact, African American. This system is fueling the direct pipeline between school and prisons. Giroux is rightfully outraged by the way our youth is being treated. This is another case of what Giroux calls "militarization of everyday life." As he mentioned, the way we treat our youth, directly reflects the state of our democracy, and cases like these, clearly reflect the poor state of our democracy and our educational and judiciary systems.
