My internship took place at Gleneagles Hospital from June 8th – 12th 2015. I helped two consultant orthopaedic surgeons, Dr. Mohana and Dr. Parameshwaran, during the week whilst I observed their work. Despite being a 16 year old high school student with no experience in this job sector, I felt a sense of comfort as I commenced my internship. Their team was so polite to me from the first day that I felt as if I was one of their full-time colleagues. My expectations were to find out how to treat general injuries, to be able to understand as well as use unfamiliar medical vocabulary that I never heard of before, moreover to recognize the injury that the patient had. A total of 50 cases happened that week, including …show more content…
On the first day, one of Dr. Mohana’s patients needed to be treated and I was told what I had to perform, whilst the doctor and the nurse gave medical care. These two opportunities gave me a chance to observe how certain cases could appear terrible, but, nevertheless, could still be treated as a minor …show more content…
One of the first things Dr. Parameshwaran taught me was that as soon as the patient enters through the door, 50% of the time you can identify their problem. For me that remained the most valuable factor I learned the entire week and from that day onwards I could always identify where the patient’s problem stood, by watching their body position and the way they walked when entering through the door. In addition, doctors should always ask what type of symptoms the patient is suffering from. For example, if the patient tells the doctor that he/she has a weakness of the legs and feels various pains, these are the symptoms of spinal stenosis. When a patient has pain all over their body, this implies it is not worth full-on addressing his issue(s) then and there; on the contrary, however, if the patient has a lot of pain in one place then it is serious. That was another feature I learnt during the
