It is the story of Patchett and her best friend, Lucy Grealy, journey together through life and the adventures of their lifelong friendship. They both started as struggling writers with the same dream of wanting to make it big. Ann knew Lucy as the popular girl that everyone knew from her experience with cancer when they were students at Sarah Lawrence, but Ann was only a stranger to back then.
