‘Tumbling’ Synopsis
Diane McKinneyWhetstone is an African American author.
Diane was born August, 14 1953 to her father, Pennsylvania
State’s Senator, Paul McKinney and his wife Besie. Diane has eight proclaimed novels and have many awards including the BCALA
Literary Award for Fiction from the Black Caucus of the American
Library Association. “Tumbling” is a Fiction novel and African
American Literature. This genre appealed to me because it allowed me to read about a complex problem about an African
American family during the Civil Rights era and feel like I could understand the situation fully by the realistic viewpoints included in the novel.

“ladie’s man” who is secretly dating Liz, Pop’s nephew who is dating Fannie, and Pastor Schell who has a crush on Noon, but is
also the pastor of her church and goto guy to help her keep the girls. “Tumbling” begins with a married couple of a year, Herbie and Noon living together in their South Philly home. Noon is a classy, Christian woman and is the daughter of a Pastor. Herbie is the total opposite is one of the often visitors at night clubs. One day, Herbie comes home to find a baby sitting in a box on his porch. Noon and Herbie named her Fannie and decided to raise her as their own. The thought of being able to raise a child and have the normality of a family gave Noon hope. Before the baby came along, Herbie and Noon had marital problems due to the fact that Herbie had a habit of clubbing and the couple had never had intercourse. Ever. As the years went on, the couple still had many problems and eventually had another “daughter” name Liz. Liz was also not one of their own, but Noon also wanted to raise Liz as her and Herbie’s own. Liz and Fannie grew up to be very close, but as life often took its courses, many things such as: obsession,secrets,and assumptions drew
