PURPOSE The purpose of the work is to show what conclusion Twain came to in regards to the human race with the use of satire and what he had actually seen for himself.
THESIS STATEMENT AND STRUCTURE At first, I thought the third sentence of the first paragraph was the thesis statement, but the more I read it, the more it appeared to fail at the properties of being a thesis statement. However, Twain does make the overall claim that mankind is lesser than animals in regards to how they act in similar situations in which their actions show they are more cruel than an animal. One good example of this is when Twain stated “… man is the only animal that deals in that atrocity of atrocities, War” (3). While there appears to be a beginning, middle, and end, the overall sentence and paragraph structures are an overall mess with the constant variation of size for both. There are areas where it seems to be a persuasive essay because of how Mark Twain tries to convince the reader of his conclusion. Then there are spots where he utilizes the concept of the compare and contrast essay format; this is very evident when Twain compares a human being to a certain animal. Finally, the well-known author bases some of his claims on his evaluations, whether they are true or potentially false, and thus makes the work seem to be in parts an evaluation essay.
