The Quotes (from Rape of the Lock)

“He watch’d th’ Ideas rising in her mind, Sudden he view’d, in spite of all her art, An earthly Lover lurking at her heart.” “Fairest of Mortals, though distinguish’d Care Of thousand bright Inhabitants of Air! If e’er one Vision touch’d thy infant Thought, of all the Nurse and all the Priest have taught, Of airy Elves by Moonlight Shadows seen, the silver Token, and the circled Green, Or Virgins visited by Angel-Pow’rs, With Golden Crowns and Wreaths of heav’nly Flow’rs, Hear and believe!”
“Then cease, bright Nymph! To mourn thy ravish’d hair, which adds new glory to the shining sphere!”
“But since, alas! frail Beauty must decay, Curl’d or uncurl’d, since Locks will turn to grey”
“Transformed to combs, the speckled, and the white. Here files of pins extend their shining rows, Puffs, Powders, Patches, Bibles, Billet-doux. Now awful Beauty puts on all its arms”
“At ev'ry word a reputation dies.”

The eighteenth century was a time that wit and satire were being brought to the forefront of literature, not only exposing certain aspects of the upper class people, but also exposing the corruption of such a ‘moral’ society in Britain, this is exactly what Alexander Pope set out to do when he wrote “The Rape of the Lock”. The satire he used was to point out the shortcomings of British society by ridiculing the upper class and accepted standards of thought – doing what he did best, revealing a great deal of hypocrisy in Great Britain. In this time of Enlightenment writing, Pope used his satire in “The Rape of the Lock” to chide society by attempting to expose the vanity of women and how unimportant things are being made to appear important.…

The Rape of the Lock is referred to, by Pope himself as An 'Heroi-Comical Poem' or a mock epic. In it the familiar social reality in which the poem is rooted undergoes a transformation through the comic use of the epic parallel so that what is created is a unique blend of fantasy (supernatural deities) and reality. Pope is a satirical poet of civilised life, defining its positives by exposing its negatives with great argumentative structure and verbal artistry. This is shown in The Rape of the Lock as it oscillates between comicality & mockery as Pope juxtaposes the seriousness of epic, with its battles of human suffering in which life and death are decided, against the triviality of the subject matter of the poem, a quarrel over the loss of a lock of hair - which is comically exalted, and the social brouhaha and fuss associated with it. There is a…

The Rape of the Lock is an example of an evolved form of a mock-heroic epic. As Broich says (1990: 113), in comparison to works of Boilaeu, Garth, or Crowne it has developed its own distinctive style in the aspect of combining the two major elementary genres. Pope’s success in merging the epic and the social comedy led to achieve certain originality that cannot be mistaken with works of any other author.…
