The discipline of Advanced Practice Nursing has grown significantly in the past few decades. It is important to understand the role, and expectations of the role, to provide quality patient care within the scope of practice. The purpose of this paper is to 1) Define the role of the Advance Practice Registered Nurse (APRN), 2) Explore the core APN Competencies, 3) Evaluate an APRN research outcome study, 4) Develop an outcome plan and 5) Discuss the Future of Nursing and implications on practice.

APN’s need to not only show a high degree of clinical competence, but also to have a clear understanding of the diverse role they are in. APN’s must market themselves to show knowledge of business, practice highly competent care and demonstrate they’re beneficial to the organization or practice. Hamric and Hanson (2003) stated “APN’s need to advocate and demonstrate their skills in the discipline to their patients and to other providers” (pg. 263). The value-added benefit needs to be evident to other health care professionals not by comparing Nurse Practitioners to Physicians, but to demonstrate the difference they make in care. To do this the NP should measure their outcomes and impact of care to evaluate if their care has proven to be beneficial. A few benefits to the APN practice include health promotion and prevention, adherence to complex medical regimes and satisfaction with care (Hamric & Hanson, 2003).
