Aa Meeting Reflection
On my way to my first NA meeting I felt intimidation and nervousness. I wondered why I was feeling this way, when my first AA meeting I felt excited and I didn’t feel any intimidation or nervousness. As I entered the room, I could instantly tell it would be very different from the AA meeting. As I suspected, it was different in many ways, such as the atmosphere of the room, more rules, and less sharing of stories. The similarities of the meetings were that of how accepting and friendly everyone is and how each meeting follows the 12 step program. The first forty minutes of the meeting were completing readings, explaining what NA is, welcoming new people to the meeting, and announcing important information about other meetings or gatherings …show more content…
There were roughly twenty-five people in the meeting. At one point, the leader mentioned how they may have to move the meeting to a bigger conference room because there were no chairs left. There were both women and men of all ages and one person was from another country. I noticed several people under the supervision of the court because of ankle monitors and their stories. Many people think that these types of addicts (criminal addicts) are only going to meetings because they are court ordered. Surprisingly, they were very active in the meeting with sharing their experiences and stories, where they were completely honest that if it wasn’t for jail they would not be in the NA meeting. One gentleman explained how he told the police to put him in jail or admit him into the hospital where he could be watched at all times otherwise he would go right back to using again. He explained that he was so deep in his addiction that when he was going through withdrawals he would look around the house to find something he could use to satisfy his craving. I was delighted to hear someone share such a personal and emotional story although he’s not the best in, but he still thought it was important for others to hear that they are not alone and to follow through with the program and treatments being

Integrative explanations could have helped the intake receptionist at The Haight Ashbury Place Free Clinic know that the defensiveness exhibited by Darlene may have been due to a history of being turned away, making her feel the need to be defensive in case of rejection. Integrative explanations could have helped the receptionist to understand that Darlene’s loud voice could be a result of the methamphetamine she was using or her desire to be louder than the voices she was hearing. A knowledge and understanding of the intersections of mental health, substance use, and trauma could have provided the receptionist the ability to take a deep breath and meet Darlene where she was at instead of creating a power…

I was very nervous about this program because it was so different than anything else I had been through. I was always able to tell the treatment counselors or judges what they wanted to hear so that I could get back to my normal way of life: using. I was worried that I would not be able to get over this road block so easily.…

I attended a Narcotics Anonymous (NA) meeting, on (fill in the blank). The person who was sharing that night was a 28-year-old woman by the name of Christine (“Chris”). She discussed her journey through the program, stating she was six months clean as of that meeting but was just getting to the point of acceptance that she did in fact have an addiction to crystal methamphetamines (“crystal meth).”…

The meeting began with some readings. I read on the AA Promises which I thought was a waste of time. In my opinion I felt like they should have left the readings for you to read to yourself because the meetings are on a time frame and people seem to have a lot of other important issues to talk about and be concerned with other than reading the same readings every time.…

The leader of the meeting noticed there were a few new faces (the four of us attending as observers, and three new substance abuse users), so she handed out a pamphlet that explained expectations and guidelines for the newcomer. This meeting was not geared to any specific religion. The focus of the meeting was becoming sober, and the journey behind being and staying sober. This led to a few sharing their story about why they decided to attend Narcotics Anonymous. The environment was welcoming, and promoted people to share their story.…

I must admit I had some reservations attending an AA meeting even though it was for school/research purposes. I’ve always felt these meetings are for the weak people who do not have enough courage and desire to square up to their problems. My skepticism of the Alcoholic Anonymous arose from watching the effect of alcoholism on families, relationships, children etc. and I always felt that these meetings were a way for alcoholics to self-validate their actions and decisions, neglecting the harm and hurt they might have caused others, especially family members. This skepticism of mine remained as I made my way into an AA open meeting as a visitor, for the sake of gaining a better perspective into the purpose of the meetings, the methods utilized…

Honestly, I entered the meeting with preconceived expectations about this experience along with its participants. After seeing AA meetings on a variety of films, I had a preconceived idea that all of the participants were “strung out” individuals that were forced to be at these meetings due to a court order. These expectations were completely false which will be discussed later in this entry. As I sat in the AA meeting and began to hear these participants’ stories, I began to feel a flood of…

Although I had done some research, I had no idea to what to expect in regards to how the meetings would go. When I arrived, I first noticed it was almost completely men, around their mid-forties. There were a couple of women, and one younger person (mid-to-late twenties), and everyone was sitting outside. The building had a house-like quality, and at first I thought I had come to the wrong place, until I saw the front of the building. It looked a lot more informal than I had imaged.…

Today, I went with Steven Campos to a coalition meeting at Christ Hospital. This was my first coalition meeting besides the YCP (Youth Crime Prevention) coalition meeting. This coalition meeting was extremely educational and useful. During this meeting, I have learned about the Restorative Justice (RJ) System. According to Steven Campos presentation, RJ offers victims a highly participatory process by focusing on the victim’s needs such as letting them tell their story by being heard in the community, participating in discussions about how to resolve their problem and letting the victim’s receive information about the circumstances of the crime.…

One particular instance where I have overdone my strengths is when I was on the community government for Connor Residence Hall and planned out the end-of-year event called Connorstock. This event is the community’s most popular event as it has the highest attendance by residents than any other events. In addition, Connorstock has been a tradition hosted by the Connor Community since 2005 and having it run successfully was key to maintaining its popularity. Connor Community Government was fully responsible for funding, planning out, and having its members run the event.…
